Massacre's crusade of blood continues, and the only one standing in his way is Batwing, who finds himself fighting alongside a legendary hero of Africa: the mighty Thunder Fall! As more heroes are targeted by this madman, the mystery of why begins to unfold, as does the story of Batwing's dark past.
One of my top five of the new 52. It's nice to have a new character actually have a good creative team behind him. I'm especially loving the art on this book by Ben Oliver and the colors by Brian Reber. There's a lot of set-up for the Congo's super-hero team, The Kingdom, which we may be seeing soon. Lastly, I really enjoy the Batwing character, even moreso now with the small amount of back story they gave us. The only thing I didn't like was the fact he can be stabbed through the chest and keep on fighting. I highly recommend this book. Read Full Review
The cover art shows off the contents of the issue as we have Thunder Fall with Batwing supporting him from behind. The neutral background colour allows the characters to take the fore. The only thing I think is lacking from the cover is a bit of movement. Both Batwing and Thunder Fall look very static. Issue two's cover used movement to great effect, and well represented the fast pace of the issue. I think this would bring a bit more life to this issue's cover. Though it is in no way bad, it could be improved upon. Read Full Review
Olivers work takes a bit of adjustment to get used to, but its still kinetic although all painted. Its as if he had made cuts out of airbrushed sections, cutting a clear line and using a lot of white space as a negative background. The lack of proper background is not much of a problem though, due to the well-done juxtaposition of painted elements and white space. Read Full Review
The fight was decently done, but seems to be dragging out a bit. We get it, Batwing's hurt, but he's too much of a hero to give up. Can we move on a bit? Read Full Review
I keep waiting to get bored of this storyline, but the excitement is in the details. The mood created in Batwing #3 shows - in powerful way - that the stakes facing David Zavimbe are very different than those facing me, you, or even Bruce Wayne. As long as Winick and Oliver can keep me off-balance and convince me of the importance of their story, I'll be clamoring for more. Read Full Review
Do you guys think that Massacre is David's brother? And what do you think it was that The Kingdom did that deserves Massacre's wrath? Read Full Review
The story continues to be engaging, but could be moving a little quicker. Fortunately, Oliver's art is as stunning as ever, which makes the pace a little easier to swallow. There's some things going on in the periphery, but I'm not sure when they'll get any storytime. We'll see how the next few issues go. Read Full Review
"Batwing" started out fun, but this issue feels like everyone is stalling for time. Hopefully the remaining chapters of this initial story will pick the pace back up, but for now what started out strong is now starting to feel average. Here's hoping that slipping quality trend doesn't continue any further down the chain. Read Full Review
About the only things still recommending this title is redeemable writing and competent art, and that's simply not enough for the long haul. A shock to the pace is seriously needed for Batwing to stay off the Dropped List. Read Full Review
