Superman hits Seattle for his last stop on his "Grounded" walk across the country, and it is in that city where everything will come to a head! The mysterious woman who has been following Superman all year makes a desperate final move, one that may cost the Man of Steel that which he holds most dear!
The end result was Lisa having permenantly gained the same powers as Superman and this time being able to use them for good. The issue even jumps into the distant future and gives you a glance at "The Superman Squad" which I will not spoil and let you guys enjoy the beautiful ending of Superman #714 and the series overall. That said, I really have to commend Chris Roberson for making the back half of this story a much better read. The approach of having Superman work his way back to his core by interacting with his friends and family, remembering what formed him, brought us to this satisfying conclusion. Grounded was a sow's ear before he came on. I'd love to hear how much he veered from Straczynski's initial notes to bring the story here. And, as I said, this was a issue was a nice send off for this incarnation of Superman. It is a shame that we won't see what would have happened next for this reinvigorated version of the character. Even after ten issues of wandering, the sudden crash Superman experienced last month felt like it had inadequate buildup, and the same goes for the heights he achieves here. Had the second half of this issue been applied to a better story, it could have been a suitable farewell to this Superman the way Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" was the perfect way to say goodbye to the pre-Crisis version. As it is, this is really little more than a footnote that, by the last Wednesday of this month, will likely be forgotten. Read Full Review
After all, "Superman" #714 is serving as not just the end of "Grounded" but also the entire post-"Crisis" era of Superman. It's a shame that the final storyline ended up being an overall dud, but Roberson at least made a lot of the individual pieces shine. Not a great finale, but Roberson gave it a shine that was far greater than it deserves. If Roberson ever gets the chance to write Superman again (but this time with his own plots, from scratch) I know I'd welcome it. Just not working off "Grounded" again, please. Read Full Review
Superman is one series where I'll very much welcome the change of pace in September. No doubt "Grounded" will be swept under the rug as quickly as the whole New Krypton saga was. That said, not every new element was a detriment to the series, and hopefully a few of the smaller, more successful additions will remain a part of the franchise. Read Full Review
