The end result is not a great accomplishment, but it is a fun and easy read with good pacing and engaging action sequences. Dynamite already proved that with Legenderry that they have a surprise sleeper on their hands, and with the quality of this first issue and others, there is no reason to expect that to stop any time soon. Steampunk may be an abnormal setting for characters, but it proves to be one which is easily pliable to being one in which strong female characters can thrive, and if that is the case then Dynamite has a winning formula for its female leads. This is a fun first issue, but doesn't exactly capture the magic of the series that it is based off. This is only the first issue, and there is plenty of room for the series to grow from here, but Andreyko is going to have to figure out the voice of Red Sonja in order to make her the exciting character that she is known as. The story is by no means bad but it isn't the stuff of legend either. It's a fast paced story that's sticks with the Red Sonja idea of kicking butt. It's one of those comics that's easy to read and then move on. Read Full Review

This was a fun, little book. It did what it needed to do for a first issue by giving you pretty much everything you need in terms of a plot with momentum and clearly defined characters. However, I could certainly see readers wanting a little bit more meat to the story to pique their interests. Marc Andreyko is a writer known forhis strong, interesting female characters, and Aneke has shown a lot of promise on Damsels and the final page of this issue. I'm not really impressed by the characters, the writing isn't very inspiring but the setting still really appeals to me and the art is attractive. There's a lot of potential in seeing how these characters come together in this world. I'm interested in seeing how Red Sonja will interact with Vampirella and next week Green Hornet enters this world which adds even more interest. I don't think these characters have ever come together like they could in this setting which is something exciting to me. We'll have to see how the world continues to build and see if this series picks up or other series come in to carry this one. I could see this character working better as a cameo but I don't think the character, as they are on the page, can carry a book. Read Full Review
