"French for Black"
An experimental retro-virus is released on a sector of MC-1, devolving the area a full century and a half! When Judge Dredd steps in to investigate, he's caught up in the wave, too, which means goodbye helmet and Lawgiver -- and hello Fedora and gat. This is Dredd like you've never seen him before. This is Dredd... noir-style!
Duane Swierczynski does an awesome job of changing the whole world of Judge Dredd with this issue of the comic. It is not an easy feat, especially when you have already established a world and then have to change the style and ideas behind it. He does this so effortlessly that it works to a point that you will think that you're reading Dick Tracy. Read Full Review
This issue serves its purpose well and that is to show that Dredd is offering something new each issue. These shifts keep this on-going fresh and really leave the reader wondering what the creative team will be offering next. It is not the strongest Dredd story but it gets the job it was meant to do done. Maybe a less fleeting conclusion would have been the better option; instead it could have been spread into 4 issues as it would have been nice to see how Dredd adapts to living in the past with the low level technology that is available to him. This Dredd series has been fantastic and this issue is no exception. Its great to get that British-style science-fiction fix in an American comic book format, rather than the oversized, weekly instalments of 2000AD. The historical write-ups by Douglas Wolk in the back which discuss how elements of the story link to Dredds published past make these single issues well worth picking up, rather than waiting for a trade. This issue is not the best Dredd Ive ever read, but its a lot of fun and definitely a good place to start for new readers. Read Full Review
Overall, this is a solid book to buy. If you like a satiric story, then this will absolutely be perfect for you to buy. If you are someone who is interested in reading this title, now will be the perfect opportunity to begin as there is barely any mention of the stories that have happened in the past. The problems aside, check out this book immediately. Read Full Review
I would say that “French for Black” is a modest effort for an iconic character that doesn't hurt the story, but doesn't put it to the next level either. It is just ok in a series that I have seen much better in past months. Still “French for Black” is priced right and will give you sufficient entertainment with great artwork. Read Full Review
