Picking up just after the cliffhanger in the show's season finale, this limited series tries to shine some like on the mysterious Illyrians. With a script that sounds like it belongs on Paramount+ and artwork that makes it easy to recognize each character, this initial issue feels like slipping into a comfy pair of slippers. It's not that hard to recommend Star Trek: Strange New Worlds The Illyrian Enigma #1 for those that have already been watching the television series. It feels like a solid extension of it and that's from someone who has never watched an episode. The visuals bring clean and expressive characters, and the coloring has a retro vibe. That aesthetic doesn't sell the awe intended by the two-page ship shot that has become a standard of any new IDW Star Trek first issue but does compliment the journey into the mysterious unknown quite well, making for an intriguing debut. For a 1st issue I'm underwhelmed. Story that is uninteresting and characters who are just thrown together. I had hoped the comic would be better than the show but it's more garbage. Star Trek is pretty much dead except for a few bright spots here or there.
