The cliffhanger didn't really feel too much like a cliffhanger. It actually felt a bit forced. It is the icing on the cake for the strange feeling you get throughout the story - that feeling of helplessness for the human X-Terminated team. Overall, this comic is a dark and gritty story of a dystopic version of the Marvel universe and Lapham looks to world build and bring in other Marvel characters (this issue has a certain swash-buckling blind hero in a new role too). I think Lapham has a long and epic journey in mind and our new characters, regardless of their questionable motivations, have a new, long and exciting journey ahead and I'm definitely along for the ride. Forget what you know about the X-Men. AGE OF APOCALYPSE takes the idea of turning everything upside down but this title is going places the previous mini-series haven't gone. We definitely have a darker feel with desperation seeing the story from the humans' perspective. Lapham and De La Torre work wonders together is giving this series a unique feel that makes it clear this isn't your average X-title. If you like the AoA world or want to see a different take on the X-Universe, this is definitely a series to check out. Other non-mutant characters may pop up as well as we get to see how everyone has been affected by this universe. Age of Apocalypse is a dark, brutal comic, a fact that is reflected in both the writing and the art. It's not a glossy world, and it's not one where you can take for granted who are the "good" guys and who are the "bad." Yet at the same time, it's a compelling comic that pulls you in and keeps you reading. The last page offers an interesting surprise that sets up a fair amount of excitement for issue two. Overall, it's definitely worth a read, whether you were a fan of the original Age of Apocalypse or not. Read Full Review

Age of Apocalypse, issue 1 is a sound dbut with the introduction of an interesting cast of characters. It ends on a memorable last page to intrigue the reader about the following episode. With so much about this book's premise already telegraphed in its prelude, the big question (certainly, for me) was what hook Lapham would come up with to bring readers back. The appearance of an unexpected character at the end prompts a tentative eyebrow raise, while the narrative twist intrigues rather than excites. There's definite potential, if only it can lighten the tone slightly and give us reasons to care about the characters. Let's hope issue #2 delivers. Read Full Review

This book is very close to being something I would normally read. This issue is very much a world building issue but it also puts on a ton of layers to an already complicated situation. It's hard to tell from this issue if the book is going to be an all-out war series or something that is much more cloak and dagger. I'm willing to give this book a couple of issues, but I found the first one to be a very mixed bag. I'm not even sure if fans of the initial Age of Apocalypse would like this because so much has changed. If you like mutants and universes where anything can happen then I suggest trying this out. The greatest flaw of Age of Apocalypse is that it tries unsuccessfully to be the Age of Apocalypse. That story is over, and Marvel has already squeezed more than every last drop of interesting material out of it. The idea of the X-Terminated would work vastly better in an new alternate universe, free from all the baggage of continuity and free to use characters readers would be more interested in seeing. The nostalgic value of the title does little to help and definitely doesn't work effectively enough to be the main selling point. The book reads like a series the creators are half-heartedly struggling through, and I can't honestly blame them. The X-Terminated are a good idea being forced into the wrong setting, and this is no Age of Apocalypse. Read Full Review
