What an incredible story this has been! As if it couldn't get more exciting, Allan Heinberg ups the ante with issue 8 of 9. Jim Cheung's gorgeous art help tell an exceptional story. His ability to capture emotion, action, excitement and expression are incredible. This is the type of book that will leave you sad when you get to the final page and the realization that you have to wait another two months for the final issue sets in. Jim Cheung continues to turn out beautiful artwork, with all three teams looking worse for the wear as the story marches in towards its conclusion next issue. This is most definitely one of those books that will change the status quo not only for the Young Avengers, but for the Marvel Universe as a whole. And knowing that the whole thing is feeding into next years big crossover makes me more interested in Avengers Vs. X-Men than I was before, which means this title is most definitely doing its job. There are rumored to be big plans coming out of Marvel after this series ends, which hopefully means a little more Young Avengers in our future, but the issue ends up not working as either a cohesive story or as a penultimate setup to whatever blowoff we're going to get next time 'round. Avengers: The Children's Crusade #8 spends all the goodwill credit that the first seven issues earned, hits the reader over the head with the writing equivalent of too much eye contact, and leaves me with a disappointed 2 out of 5 stars overall.
