Ensemble fights can be downright dull in superhero comics, simply replaying the same battle over and over again. Surprisingly, Bendis and Deodato deliver a smart and entertaining fight issue hot on the heels of a battle royale against Norman Osborn's Dark Avengers. More knock-down, drag-out fights are a given for the future and "New Avengers" #21 is a good sign things will stay fresh with a high level of innovative thinking. Read Full Review
It's too early to outright condemn this storyline, but presumably this story will wrap up soon. The creative team only has a couple of months left before the Avengers vs. X-Men juggernaut takes over the storylines for both lines. Read Full Review
Though the start to the Dark Avengers saga was very plodding, the last two issues have largely fixed the pacing issues and now New Avengers strides forward at a robust rate. This is another enjoyable sock-them-up from Brian Bendis and co.; however, this reviewer hopes that the actual plot progression picks up speed now that the explosive fights seem to be out of the way for the time being. With the pickle the Avengers seem to have gotten into courtesy of Osborn's scheming, it will be quite interesting to see how they can possibly get out of this one with their reputations intact. While suffering from some of the same problems as Avengers #22 had this week, this issue is better, and certainly more exciting. Either way, both books are definitely worth looking at for the art. Read Full Review
Sadly, Mike Deodato's artwork is particularly rough this month. In past issues, the problem was the stiff, eerie quality that comes from too much CG work. This month, Deodato merely seems rushed, and his figures are much more loose and scratchy than usual. The quality of the inking varies wildly over the course of the book. Hopefully Deodato's work can stabilize in these final chapters of "The H.A.M.M.E.R. War." Read Full Review
