Overall, I loved this issue. The decision to start with the updated 1980's panels is, I think, a brilliant one. The only thing that keeps me from giving this issue a full 10/10 is the fact that it relies so heavily on prior knowledge of that Uncanny X-Men #251 issue. While Seeley does a great job of catching readers up, the "previously in and explanatory panels simply aren't enough for someone to jump right into the story without some prior reading. Personal feelings of the overall concept of this series aside, the first issue of Psylocke: Ninja is inoffensive enough on a technical level to warrant a glance if you have nostalgia for this time in Betsy Braddocks history. The '80s were the X-Men's best decade, and this story takes place during that period, when Elizabeth Braddock and the X-Men walked through the Siege Perilous, leading to her being body-swapped with Kwannon. Seeley does a good job of capturing the characters of the era, but if I'm being honest, this feels like a weird time to set this story. Fans love Kwannon Psylocke, and she eventually takes the helm in the story, but this is a very early version, one who doesn't remember her life or Betsy's. Her fans begged for her to get another series after the last ended, so it feels weird to give her a book starring a version of the character that isn't completely the one that readers want. Psylocke: Ninja #1 is the kind of issue that will satisfy continuity hounds who want every corner of Betsy Braddock's history pinned down, but everyone else will feel the weight of the captions long before the last page. The core idea, that a bad choice with the Siege Perilous leads straight into a morally rotten deal with the Hand and puts Betsy's mind on a collision course with Elektra, is solid but smothered in explanation. If your comic stack is tight and you are choosing between fresh stories and deep cut origin repair jobs, this one only really earns a slot if you are a devoted Psylocke or Hand fan. Read Full Review
