I was a little worried when I saw that the ratings for this first issue were merely “good”, but I needed have worried: after reading, this is classic, brilliant Hickman. I’ve never particularly cared about any comic with a vampire in it, but Hickman has me here with some new twists on old friends (and excellent Easter egg nods to X-Men history). I absolutely can’t wait to see where this story is g oing. Far and away superior to the other two Midnight books that launched today. The most excited I’ve been for a Marvel first issue in a very long time. Hickman, you’ve done it again. more

Maybe I’m somewhat influenced by all the negativity surrounding Midnight Spider-Man, but honestly, I didn’t like it at all.

It was a bold move for Marvel to put a Manga artist on this book, one that is drawing in a very sketchy, loose style to boot. Unfortunately, the result doesn’t work at all. Whenever there’s a hint of horror, the cutesy anime eyes take me out of it. The pale coloring, another bold but bad decision, makes the line art, if one could call it that, look even more unfinished. Marvel probably aimed for a unique, atmospheric look here, but it just flooks flat and lazy.

I also wasn’t blown away by what little story there is. As a matter of fact, I felt nothing while reading it, probably because of the art.

All in all, Midnight Spider-Man #1 is a huge disappointment. It’s a shame, because the concept is great and probably could have worked quite well with a different artist. I give Marvel credit for trying to create something that’s different, but the result is a misstep that could have been avoided easily.more

One of the most sloppy, rushed, unsatisfying and abrupt endings to a major storyline that I can remember. Dreadful stuff.

Absolute trash.

I thought this was a really poor effort, especially as a new #1 issue. I bought almost every issue of the previous volume and still food the story here to be choppy and hard to follow.
