DIVIDED WE STAND PART 2 Cyclops and Emma adventure to the recently transformed San Francisco, complete with flower power and hippies. Can they get back to reality? Or will they succumb to their groovy desires and embrace the love generation forever?
I don't know if I should actually dock the issue any points for this, but it does manage to spoil the upcoming finale of Astonishing X-Men pretty severely. I do feel bad for the rest of the X-writers for being forced to tiptoe around that storyline for so long. Just be advised that spoilers are afoot, and consider whether this enjoyable and whimsical storyline is worth the spoilage. At least Uncanny X-Men #496 offers plenty to make up for it. But what do you do with a comic you can't read? Salivate over Mike Choi's art. His work isn't just perfect anatomically and thematically. It's sexy! As a guy, you can't help but feel the attraction toward any of his women -- especially Emma Frost! With her hair pulled back, her bare neck and shoulders reveal what Ovid referred to as fit to be squeezed. That attractiveness is displayed in each of the characters' body language and facial expressions. Coupled with dynamic perspectives, the artwork provides a good deal of subtext and emotion to Brubaker's dialogue. Although Uncanny X-Men continues to be a great series and deserves to be picked up, spoiler-haters should be cautious. Read Full Review
Uncanny X-Men #496 was a dependable read. However, it is a bit of a slow read and, therefore, might not appeal to readers who aren't big X-Men fans. Brubaker is clearly taking his time with this story arc. Obviously, Brubaker is slowing things down and catching his breath as he sorts through the wreckage of the Messiah Complex. I don't mind a filler story arc right after a large event. However, after the next issue, I fully expect Brubaker to clearly outline the future of this title post Messiah Complex and get moving. I can't see me picking this up again next month, but I am weak willed, so I guess I can't guarantee that if it falls on another slow week for me. Like BND, some might like the new direction, but this is not the kind of book I want to read. Read Full Review
This is the epitome of a skippable issue. Even hardcore X-fans like me will be bored to tears. If you're looking for "Messiah Complex" fallout, there are a number of perfectly acceptable books dealing with it. And even if you're just looking for a good story, Uncanny X-Men doesn't deliver. Mike Choi and Sonia Oback continue to dazzle my eyes with their art. But it's not perfect: Logan looks too youthful and too much of a pretty boy, while the fight scene in the bar is completely uninspired from an action standpoint. The nod to Neil Gaiman's Eternals mini-series was probably the only thing I really liked. Read Full Review
