For a lifelong Marvel Comic book fanatic, who grew up reading about the Shi'ar in Uncanny X-Men and the Kree in Avengers this was euphoric experience. After reading this issue, I can confidently state that War of Kings is going to finally give us a Marvel event that lives up to expectations. One last thing before I cut out, the cover price for this comic is a rather daunting $3.99. Although the cover price is a bit high, this comic was WELL worth it! A veritable dream for science fiction/fantasy fans, War of Kings is event comics done right. Abnett and Lanning might be flying a bit under the radar, but there is no question that what they've been doing at Marvel is special. War of Kings #1 was an incredibly entertaining issue. Do not be scared to give this issue a try just because you missed out on Annihilation Conquest, Secret Invasion Inhumans or Brubaker's Uncanny X-Men story arc dealing with Vulcan. It is not necessary to have read those comics in order to enjoy War of Kings #1. DnA do their best to make sure to give the reader enough all the information in this issue that they need to know in order to properly enjoy War of Kings. This issue might not have the scale of other Marvel events just yet, but both the writing and the art are unassuming in their appeal, but never lacking in it. It is a classically and colorfully fun book, and with the dire machinations of Dark Reign taking over one little corner of the Universe, it's lovely to see the other 99.976% having a blast.
