Legends of the Geomancer #2 provides more of the brutal visuals of the first issue. Few artists are as perfect of a match for a story as Ryp is for this, as his thick lines and heavily detailed spreads encapsulate the world's raw and primitive nature. Read Full Review
Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer #2 is an exciting adventure beginning with a thrilling fight sequence that ends up taking Anni and the rest of her followers on a journey to discover why the Earth is upset at humanity. The pacing is excellent and I was actually hoping I could continue reading once I got to the end; it was that engrossing of a story. Ryp's artwork was gorgeous to look at from the sweeping terrains to the intricate detail of Nergal's jewelry. Jordie Bellaire adds to the beauty with her gritty browns and reds in the steppe locations to the calming blues of the glacier and its surrounding puddles. Read Full Review
Book of Death: Legends of the Geomancer continues to be a worthy tie-in to Valiant's latest event, as despite the 1:10 printing (in which retailers have to buy 10 copies of the main series for 1 of this) possibly being off putting, the story itself is a worthy addition for any collector not afraid to spend that little bit extra. Frankly, given that Valiant are using this book as an incentive for retailers to order the main Book of Death series, I had hoped for something a little more impressive. Instead what we have is a solid mini-series that certainly has moments of greatness, but is ultimately bogged down by boring characters and a somewhat predictable storyline. While this series hasn't tainted the Geomancer in the same way that the Star Wars prequels arguably ruined the character of Darth Vader, it's questionable just how much memorable material it's adding to the character's mythos and indeed whether this series needed to be made at all.
