ALL-NEW ARC! DEATH OF A RENEGADE - PART 1 (of 3)!
Peter Stanchek and his wayward team of teenage Renegades thought they had found freedom. They thought they could get their old lives back. They thought they could bring down Toyo Harada and the Harbinger Foundation. They were wrong. And now one of them will die.
This series instantly shot back up to my top five. It's going to be very hard for other series to top this because of how well constructed the story is and how fantastic the art is executed. In comics a company has a title that they measure the success of all their other comics to; for DC its Batman, for Marvel it's either X-Men or the Avengers. Sure it's a bar set by sales, but for me that bar is Harbinger at Valiant. This is their best series and I will continue to say that for as long as it remains true. If you haven't read it, there's no better time than now to begin. Read Full Review
The issue was a great start to a very pivotal character and story related arc. Henry, Reber and Dysart are delivering the best work of their careers and it will only get better. "Death of a Renegade" is off to a smart and strong start and can only get much better from here. And that will make it that much more heartbreaking for when we lose one of our characters. Harbinger #22 is a great kick off to what feels like a very sad and painful story by the end of the arc. It's simply good story telling and Harbinger has always been about that at it's core. A great story. Dysart is in no short supply of being able to clearly present, a group of teenagers, who mature quickly through conflict and still feel genuine and honest. With so many great arcs in Harbinger's run this is setting up to be a classic and readers are the ones who will benefit most. Harbinger is easily the top Valiant title which is mainly character and emotionally driven with unlikely heroes and terrifying villains. Certainly Dysart is not above getting his hands dirty but focuses mainly on great character and drama to drive Harbinger into one of Valiant's best series going. Read Full Review
Harbinger #22 is where things get real and I finished this issue wanting to know what comes next. Truthfully I was put off from the fact that it was announced so early that a Renegade would die, but actually reading this issue I forgot any of that frustration and my mind is set on finding out who will bite the dust. With something this big you have to hope that the delivery of that death is one memorable and do that character justice. We have stuck with this same cast from the start and it would be depressing to lose one for the sake of having a major death. Read Full Review
With great pacing, clear line work and true-to-life dialogue driving an intriguing story, Harbinger #22 serves not only as a great story but as a fantastic jump-on point for new readers. Read Full Review
Harbinger is in a great place right now, although it will be tough to see which one of the Renegades pays the ultimate price. Even dating back to its original 90's incarnation, Harbinger was never shy about taking out characters, so I don't expect Valiant to sugarcoat a story arc committed to the death of a character. This was a very good introductory issue to the final arc. Dysart is definitely keeping readers guessing as to which Renegade is going to get it and it could be a fan favorite. The tandem of Clayton Henry and Brian Reber come through again as well with a knock out issue. If the rest of this arc is comparable to this issue, the series will go out with a nice bang.
