This was long overdue!

A lot of people said we didn't need this because we already have the original 1986 Marv Wolfman and George Perez series. But that was 40 years ago, and a lot of things have happened in DC history, including continuity-destroying events like New 52 that made everything stop making sense, plus an eventual restoration of the Post-Crisis continuity in Doomsday Clock where they assured us that everything happened.

Mark Waid isn't rewriting DC history, he's compiling it, polishing the rough edges and streamlining it. And boy, does he do an impressive job. The research for this thing is absolutely phenomenal. There's even things that I didn't even know existed. It's a wonderful work of love that shows the breadth, scope and wonder of the vast DC Universe. Dare I say, this is even more comprehensive than the original version, with all due respect to the absolute legends that are Wolfman and Perez. The amount of material is just overwhelming. Indeed, everything happened, Waid is just showing us how.

I still need to see how are they going to handle the most messy parts of the continuity, but so far I have to say I'm impressed with what I've seen. My only nitpick is that they don't reference that Hippolyta as Wonder Woman is actually beint time displaced from the modern era of heroes and that it happened during John Byrne's run. I think it's important to clarify that because Diana should always be the first Amazon that set sail for man's world, and that she created the Wonder Woman mantle and her mother is being inspired by her. I hope they can fix it in the collected edition or perhaps it will be shown in issue #3?

After last issue’s disappointing conclusion to the Fries arc, Snyder comes ROARING back to full-form this issue with a truly terrifying introduction for the absolute version of Bane, which I think is far more epic and scary than his original introduction way back in 1992. Dragotta’s art showcases his best work yet, and the combination with the writing and coloring is absolute perfection! Bruce is finally in over his head and it will likely be up to his friends to save him. I didn’t want this issue to end! It’s my favorite to-date! more
