Apr 29, 2026This is a very different kind of antagonist for Zatanna, one who will test her skills in a new way, and it’s a great start that feels different enough from the previous mini to justify the new #1. I’m hoping Campbell can continue to deliver a story as ambitious as this opening issue, while also continuing to tie it in more deeply with the ongoing plot threads in the DCU that this is spinning out of. Apr 30, 2026Zatanna #1 raises the curtain on a spectacular time filled with colorful realms, strange and dangerous creatures, and the new Prime Magus doing what she does best: saving the day, and having fun doing it. This title is clearly a labor of love for Jamal Campbell, with his writing, art, and colors working in perfect harmony. Zatanna Zatara's Grand Tour of the Realms may have just started, but I'm already ready for the encore. She may have just claimed the title of Prime Magus, but Zatanna is already making it her own. I admit I was lost for a good part of the issue, but the explanations at the end made everything clearer. I think it's going to be fun.

In terms of narrative progression with Zatanna, Campbell knows what he is doing. With the artistry being reminiscent of fairytale books and leaning into the fantastical side of Zee's life rather than the often reliance of the stage aesthetic; this new fantastical narrative of a existence of a prime Magnus is a wonderful idea and the use of classic, new and previous dc magical characters as a association of the magical existence in the dc universe leaves the reader in great anticipation for where this series goes next.

There isn't much meat on the bone in issue one, story wise. Which leaves you questioning if this issue is worth it. The pace, action, visuals are on point but there is nothing new or something to be excited about.
