Alan Scott: The Green Lantern (2023) #4
Jan 30, 2024 |
Every single member of the creative team brought their A-Game for this issue. There are some truly personal moments towards the end of the book that were my absolute favorites (you'll know it when you see it), and I loved the hints of mythology that were subtly peppered into the dialogue. This story is a prime example of why I love reading comics. If you haven't been reading this book, now is the time to catch up as Alan Scott: The Green Lantern keeps getting better with each new installment. The character moments are incredibly raw and genuinely impressive. |

Williamson and team have crafted an interesting tale to get readers up to speed on the background of this nefarious villain, incorporating elements from G.I. JOE lore that will surely be surprising as you flip through the book. From an art perspective, Milana and Leoni made some killer creative choices, painting a weird-yet-intenseworld for the villains to play in. Although there are some interesting parallels, I enjoyed how off the rails this title was in comparison to the Duke mini-series. I won't say which page, but I audibly gasped while reading this book. We've seen a lot of big names move away from "The Big Two to launch their own IPs in recentyears (shout-out to the Massive-Verse creative team, also supported by Image), and this is looking to be quite an experience. The stark dichotomy between the lead characters and their situations is quite intriguing. I love how the creative team balanced the narrative to give readers a solid understanding of how their lives have played out, and the third act reveal has me ready for more. If you are a fan of Supernatural, this book would be up your alley. Beyond the narrative itself, the visuals are quite impressive. Out of all of the Knight Terrors stories, the Green Lantern chapters have easily been my favorites.I know that there is always a bit of hesitation when it comes to diving into event tie-in issues, butKnight Terrors: Green Lantern #1 & #2 have proven to be impactful character-driven stories that are worth your time and money. “Are you smiling…?”, a.k.a the moment of terror on Insomnia's face when he realized that he made a critical mistake with Hal, is a moment that I will not soon forget. Also, the “Aunt Lacey” line was another perfect Hal moment that was executed with flair. The artistic teams for both installments also deserve recognition, as they have designed some iconic visuals throughout these horror-inspired adventures. The covers alone make these issues worth getting, but the color choices expertly compliment the nightmarish panels. |

Out of all of the “From the Ashes” books, NYX continues to be my personal favorite. Don't get me wrong, the flagship X-Men titles are fun, but I was a massive fan of the Academy X series when it came out, and I'm thrilled to see these characters take center stage once again in a book of their own (along with their new friend Ms. Marvel). This isn't a team book in atraditional sense, and thecharacter-centric stories with a shifting focus between the core cast have allowed for a deeper connection to the plight of our heroes. Jackson and Collin have perfectly captured each of their respective voices and personalities in this series, and the art from Enid and Raul works beautifully to ground the characters in the world of New York. |

Oct 24, 2023 |
The arrival of The Premier on Earth has sparked new challenges for our heroes. How would you handle an alien armada showing up on your doorstep? Thanks to the creative efforts of Higgins and team, we get to see very different approaches to the situation at hand. Ferigato and Angulo have created an intense spectacle for Marshall's tale, while Costa and Fernandes crafted Nathan's adventures. The action sequences were beautifully designed throughout both iterations, and I also appreciated the balance of important character moments. Events play out very differently for each hero, and it will be interesting to see how much the war will diverge in subsequent books. These chapters were definitely worth the wait, as the creative team continues to raise the bar for the already impressive series. |

Ranger Academy (2023) #1
Oct 3, 2023 |
Do you have what it takes to become a future Power Ranger? This topic seems to be a key issue leading into the upcoming launch of the book. Although there aren't any aliens or monsters to fight, Ranger Academy succeeds by leveraging the values of the Power Rangers to tell a somewhat grounded story…set in space. The future seems bright with the launch of this original story, and I am interested to see what the creative team does with these threads. |

End of the Spider-Verse: Part Seven "Spider-Genesis exceeded expectations as the story-arc came to a close. Juggling countless Spider-themed characters sure seems like a cake-walk for Dan and the team, as they managed to give many of our favorites time in the spotlight (more Mayday Parker would still be appreciated). |

I was pleasantly surprised by Spider-Man 2099: Exodus, from story to execution, so I have high hopes for Orlando's creative approach being applied to a symbiote-centric story. The dynamic duo of Justin Mason and Jordan Boyd work perfectly to bring the dramatic gritty future world to life with style. |

I dont know why I do this. I cant save them all.… These two statements seem like they are going to be the central theme for this run. This Pavitr is struggling with his why, and I think this run will see him finding it. While there isnt much physical conflict in this issue, quite frankly it doesnt need it because it does a wonderful job of setting up the mental and emotional conflict that this series is going to tackle. Whether you read the original run almost 20 years ago or just found out about this iteration from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, I think that there is something for every Spidey fan in this book. |

Star Trek (2022) #9
Jun 13, 2023 |
There were so many standout moments in this issue, but the insane amount of joy that Lt. Shaxs is having throughout the battle was truly incredible. Enthusiasm is infectious, and the energy from the writers and the characters comes through wonderfully with each and every page turn. I also loved Lily's continued character growth, putting the excited Bajoran in his place as she expertly does her job. Lieutenant Descheeni as the crew's “cavalry” was equally as impressive, leading to an engaging discussion with Commander Data and a memorable entrance on the station. The Red Path continues to get more and more dangerous with each passing issue, and I am excited (yet scared) to see what the creative teams for Star Trek & Star Trek: Defiant have in store for readers with the upcoming release of Day of Blood. |

Star Trek: Day of Blood (2023) #1
Jul 28, 2023 |
If you've been following ComicsOnline over the last few months, you probably know how much we've been enjoying the IDW Star Trek books. The creative team has carved out a unique story within the greater Star Trek world, adding rich character development and engaging interactions with each passing issue. Star Trek: Day of Blood #1 feels like a critical moment for Trek, and this stellar first installment has established that more dark days are ahead for Sisko, Worf, and their respective crews. There is so much to love in this book, and I couldn't narrow down my favorite character pairing if I wanted to. Do yourself a favor and grab this issue (as well as the previous IDW Publishing Star Trek comics) from your Local Comic Store this week. This is an event that you don't want to miss. |

The creative teams at IDW continue their hot streak of engaging Star Trek books, as both the main Star Trek flagship title and Star Trek: Defiant consistently provide readers with stellar new stories. Although the character line-ups for each book seemed a bit odd at first glance, the character dynamics and interpersonal relationships are well written and seamlessly capture the voices of our favorite heroes. Star Trek: Defiant (2023) #6

The “Day of Blood” crossover event continues to excite with each new chapter. Cantwell's installment is full of amusing character moments and developments. Although this issue was used to move the characters into strategic positions for the larger narrative, all of the engagements felt important. Unzueta's art style and Louise's colors help to bring a sense of urgency and impending doom on the Klingon Homeworld, adding to the harsh reality that our heroes are facing. The story continues in IDW Publishing's Star Trek #11! |

Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Echoes (2023) #1
May 17, 2023 |
From an art perspective, I thoroughly enjoyed Chudakov's character designs and action sequences. The coloring from Alonso felt perfectly aligned with the color tones from The Motion Picture, grounding this story further for Star Trek fans. The arrival of the Enterprise in the opening pages might be my favorite element of the artwork, as the grand entrance felt appropriate for a story set in the film era. |

Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Echoes (2023) #2
Jun 13, 2023 |
While the first issue did a lot of story setup, this issue featured a lot of action as the story quickly kicks into high gear. Guggenheim's pacing was spot on and couldn't have been any better if he tried. The dialogue between Alternate Uhura and Kirk on the bridge was a highlight, leading to the kidnapping plan and pursuit of Akris. Spock's aversion to dancing was truly the best line in the issue, and I dare you not to laugh out loud at this discussion. I also appreciated the commentary on this era's Starfleet uniform, as it will surely resonate with the fans. The art continues to be equally as impressive, as Chudakov's character designs for the TMP era are filled with nuance and flair. Alonso's color choices compliment this vibrant era, expertly adding depth to the TMP adventure. |

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2024) #1
Jul 21, 2024 |
After 40 years of storytelling, one would think that it might be hard to find a fresh new angle to take with beloved heroes. Thankfully, that isn't the case with this new launch. Aaron and the creative team clearly have a distinct vision for this book, I have a feeling that we are in for a wild ride with this RADICAL new direction for the heroes in a half shell. The art feels grounded, and the fish-out-of-water story for Raph was an interesting way to begin this new journey. There's one page in particular that I loved at the end of the book (we'll call it Raphael's return to form) that will surely excite readers of all ages. After reading this book, I cant think of a better way to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of TMNT. |

The Rocketfellers (2024) #1
Nov 4, 2024 |
The Rocketfellers “Family Odysseys” launch caught my attention when it was teased in Ghost Machine #1 earlier this year. I'll admit, I had some pretty high hopes for this book and it more than exceeded expectations. It would have been easy for the creative team to just play with sci-fi tropes for this family of time-displaced castaways, but they found a way to ground the sci-fi component and lean into the human element for a truly unique story. I will give credit to the Ghost Machine creators, each of these books feels distinctly different. The Rocketfellersfits perfectly into an existing gap in the comic book industry, and I couldn't be more excited to see where the family's adventures go from here. I would be shocked if you didn't enjoy this book. |

With decades of stories across dozens of variations, taking on the Transformers and creating something new might have felt like a daunting task. While speaking with both Robert Kirkman and Daniel Warren Johnson over the last few months, it was abundantly clear that they have a deep appreciation for these characters. Once you get this book in your hands, you'll understand just how BIG this launch truly is. |

Kirkman and team continue to tell a captivating story in this new chapter of Void Rivals. I love the dynamic between Darak and Solila, and appreciate the callbacks to the weirder elements from Transformers G1 & The Transformers: The Movie. The inclusions all seem to have a purpose, moving the narrative along while providing additional enjoyment for those of us who grew up watching the robots in disguise. De Felici and Lopes' art style and color choices are more impressive with each passing issue, ensuring that the outer space adventures of these characters are striking and rich. |

Wonder Woman #800 was everything that you could ask for in a WW comic. Diana's friends and family were enlightening both for her and the readers, providing an interesting perspective as she traversed the ritual. The dream-like state was quite a complimentary concept for this celebration, as the art in the book felt seamless despite the crazy number of talented artists who contributed to the story. The cut to the future was a clever way to get readers excited about the future of the book, and I was absolutely thrilled when Lizzie revealed her full name on the final pages (no spoilers). Whether you are a regular reader of the Wonder Woman comics, or just interested in checking out the extra-sized special, you can rest assured that Wonder Woman #800 is a flawless issue. |
