In the world of comics, there is a tendency to return to fan-favorite characters and stories every so often to cash in on fan nostalgia. There are plenty of examples, and in the last few months, there are a number of such announcements that have been made across the industry. Thankfully for readers, Battle Beast does NOT fall into this category, as it is clear that the creators have a specific story and adventure to tell. Their excitement, passion, and enthusiasm for this character (and the broader Invincible Universe) help to differentiate this book, and it is clear that the first issue is just the tip of the iceberg. It is truly impressive seeing how Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley do not miss a beat with their work on Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #1. Battle Beast #1 delivers exactly what it promises: a violent, visually stunning return to the Invincible Universe with one of its most iconic side characters. Given the popularity of the Invincible TV show and Battle Beast himself, the expectations were high for Kirkman and Ottley's new book. However, this comic shows they know exactly what they are doing with the character. Battle Beast is portrayed here as cool and vicious as he ever has been. It was great to see glimpses of his nature when he isn't solely focused on combat, and I am excited to see where the comic takes him and his new companions next. Read Full Review

Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #1 isn't bad in any way, it's quite entertaining. But, the first issue doesn't suck you in enough or build upon its rather simple plot. Invincible fans will love diving back into the series while new readers will be left saying, “that's it?”. We'll see what future issues bring but as such a high profile debut, it feels like a tie-in comic from the past offering nothing new or exciting. Read Full Review
INVINCIBLE UNIVERSE: BATTLE BEAST #1 is one of those rare comics that gives you exactly what you expect. Robert Kirkman drops the thinnest of setups before jumping right to the action with the promise of more. Ryan Ottley's bloody, macho art is tailor-made for this story. If all you want to do is read about a muscle-bound warrior fighting bigger muscle-bound warriors, you're going to love it. Read Full Review
Why did this take so long?
This was the good kind of mindless violence and fun I was hoping to get from Wolverine:Revenge.
It's nice to see Ryan Ottley and Kirkman team up again. I miss Battle Beast, and I like how we get to see more of Battle Beast
LFG
As a huge fan of the original comic run, this is a wonderful treat.
I have never read an issue of Invincible, but the preview of Battle Beast looked interesting enough to give it a chance. I expected something like Tellos or Masters of the Universe with more depth. I was obviously misled by the preview pages showing BB walk across an alien landscape to confront a mysterious head inserted into a wall. Unfortunately, the actual comic is not mysterious at all, but pretty straight forward, pubescent splatter comedy. As such, it works quite well. Personally I'm too old to see the fun in flying entrails and alien body fluids when there isn't anything more to it, but I'm sure Battle Beast will find its fans.
