Finally, a writer I can trust with Jo Mullein (apart from NK Jemisen, obviously).

This is the Green Lantern book I've been waiting for. I love the Lanterns but on the main earth it's just gotten way too complicated. It's why I really like the Absolute versions of the characters. I think this is my favorite of the newest 3, The Flash, Martian Manhunter, & Green Lantern. I can't afford to collect all 6 of the absolute titles, I'm going to have to pick 3. This will be one of them.
I think Al Ewing is a great choice for this story. I love that it feels very horror/sci fi. I really dig the beginning of the story. Al had me hooked from the first page. The art by Jahnoy Lnsday is equally great. This is a great team, and I hope they stick around. I can't wait to see where it goes!
I'll be reading this and several other reviews on my podcast, "Lunchbreak Reviews." Look it up, and reach out to talk comics, tv, & movies. more

Was super excited to see Ewing attached to a Green Lantern title, and he definitely delivered. Linsday is an artist I haven't really seen a whole lot of, but I like his work here. I particularly think he does a fantastic job of showing the fear in Hal's eyes, with his interaction with the cop at the beginning being when I first noticed it. I know that, after this was announced, Ewing mentioned this would be more horror-based. With what I saw from Lindsay here, I think he can prove himself to be a great choice for this book. Aside from the art, the story was really well-paced and super interesting, in my opinion. Really looking forward to what comes next from this side of the Absolute Universe.

wow..... just wow. The art not only floored me, but I love this twisted horror green lantern concept. This take was done in Earth One Green Lantern, but this series has a different spin on it. Al Ewing's writing may not be my cup of tea, but I can't deny he's a good writer.
Overall, as a DC Fanboy, I am very pleased with the Absolute Universe. DC Comics is just firing on all cylinders on all the series.

Another fantastic Absolute debut issue. This one takes what we know about the DCU GL mythos and completely flips it on its head, starting with a very ominous prologue involving Hal Jordan, followed by what appears to be a horrific and mysterious cosmic disaster that strikes an American city. Without giving away spoilers, it seems like the characters we knew to be heroes may not all be in this universe, and the story calls into question whether the power of the lantern is benevolent…or something darker. Kudos to this creative team for crafting a story that keeps us guessing, and a big middle finger to DC for how this book was marketed. My fellow readers will understand what that means exactly.

Love this. Gave me vibes of Ewing's Hulk run. Man on the run style.

An intriguing reinvention of the Green Lantern series and some of its core characters. Even if some elements have been spoiled by previews, it feels promising !

I assume this whole story will set up a more appropriate introduction of our hero. Great villains make for great heroes as they say. What’s disappointing is I don’t get to enjoy seeing our Green Lantern in action like previous Absolute heroes.
Although the Absolute series is a reboot of classic DC origin stories, each retelling features a hero well versed in their abilities and overall mission. Al Ewing, on the other hand, submits a story that does not showcase our hero at all. A decision that deftly avoids any critique of her abilities.
Is this a ploy to diffuse DEI rhetoric? Possibly. I’m willing to give Ewing the benefit of the doubt. However, he has a lot to prove with issue 2.

i see a lot of people saying how much this reminds them of Immortal hulk and i get it, i mean it does come close to the things we associate with Hulk, but surprisingly i feel like there is a lot of manga influence here, in the drama of it, the tension and just overall the visual language. The building up of anxiety, the fast pace, and the gradation of it, plus the suggestiveness of art and especially the colors, make those moments really really innerving and all-consuming.
It's a comic that is a lot clearer than some of the other titles of the Absolute line, a lot more tried, and it does not feel as fresh in its structure. I praised the fast pace, but at times it comes at a cost of introducing stuff more naturally, so it feels overtly simple this way, which also leads to the suggestiveness of art being too much, too, like when hal does those anime profile pic poses and those are so hard to take seriously. Like this comic is direct for better or worse, so much so that at times it is jarring, and it does not feel earned, at least to me. That being said at the same time, it feels like there is so much story here, and even if we moved fast, we did not see much of what was laid as a foundation, like the foundation was built fast, but we did not get a single answer. So many things are to be explored, and this genuinely excites me. Knowing Ewing, this could evolve in many directions.
As i said, it works really well in those more extreme situations of building up tension, where the extremeness of the situation calls for the extremeness of the art, in those other situations not soo much. more

It’s pretty good. The art isn’t really for me and the story didn’t really grab me. But I have a lot of faith in Al Ewing.

Its just ok, I guess. Nothing really pops out art wise nor it tells an exciting story. As a GL reader I imagen you're bias, but as a first reader... this is nothing special... at all...
Compared to what the other absolute series achieved in their first issue, this is the weakest start of them all. I'll stick around and I hope it will only goes up from here on.

This should have and could have been really good but for some reason it felt flat. To be honest alot of the art was underwhelming and nothing really was there to drive a fast paced space story. Hopefully this will all be ironed out in a issue or two and I'm hopeful that eventually it will be awesome.....JM

Art is awkward and inconsistent. Generic at best. Mediocre and derivative all around.

While the Absolute line garners critical and fan acclaim, I believe its focus on dark reimaginings of DC's vibrant heroes squanders significant creative talent. The Absolute Batman series succeeds because the character inherently lends itself to darker narratives.
This Absolute Green Lantern iteration is unsuccessful. The characterizations of the main characters feel significantly misaligned. I strongly dislike the blending of Green Lantern mythology with horror. I'm finished with this series.

DC should have known better than constantly making Hal a pathetic villain while price gouging his variant covers to make money.
