What a banger of a first issue! Combines so many things that I love about comics: weirdness, an attitude of self criticism, beautiful art, ugly people, multimedia shenanigans, and a commentary on the past, present, and future.
Minotaur #1
Five years ago, a government supercomputer triggered the Singularity: an explosion of technological superintelligence heralding an unimaginable tomorrow. At least, it almost did. Within moments, a failsafe activated. The plug was pulled. The future was aborted. But something leaked in those first picoseconds, through wire and wave. And now? The fut...
Infernal Hulk #9
As the Fallen Army spreads across the globe, Infernal Hulk sets his sights on the Baxter Building and the secret weapon that MR. FANTASTIC thinks will end Hulk's conquest of Earth! Meanwhile, BRUCE BANNER and DOCTOR VOODOO undertake a suicide mission into the Soul Cages to steal a weapon of a different sort...
This series has mostly fed on uncertainty up to this point, and that does not change with this issue. It's hard to cheer for anything when the whole plot feels like a sick game they're playing on you. Thankfully, I dig that vibe so I'm happy to stick around with it.
Batwoman #5
As Batwoman’s quest to avenger her sister’s death reaches its apex, she discovers the Dark Faith have a new, much more terrifying plan. A Kane must be the Alice who ushers in the era of Darkseid…and if Beth is dead, Kate must take her place. How do you fight the devil when the devil is real? Greg Rucka & DaNi bring an epic conclusion to their first...
Slowly revving up, but still feels like a lot of teasers more than anything. Pacing is better than the first issue, and in general it feels more confident and self-assured. Maybe that's just because I'm already invested in this world a bit, but I definitely found Dev a more interesting character in this one. The humour/dialogue is still very hit or miss, and as a self proclaimed lover of works whe more
M1: Monster Racing League #2
JAE LEE's new, ongoing series continues! Dev's reign over the underground car racing league ends when the competition gets W-YLD. Monsters, start your engines! This high-octane sci-fi drama, set in a near-future Tokyo, is Akira meets Stranger Things. Fast. Mutated. Dangerous.
Awesome to see everything that was so carefully put together start to come apart, and start to really get a feel for these characters.
Of the Earth #3
Tabby encounters something strange in the basement.
Awesome to read a comic by people who are as big (if not bigger) fans of Brian DePalma, David Cronenberg, and Chuck Jones as I am. Little light initially, (spends a bit too much of its brief time in Cube Town) but the last couple pages were fantastic and I'm excited to see more of it.
Clayface: Celebrity Dirt #1
Before he was Clayface, Basil Karlo was one of the hottest stars in Hollywood. As he breaks out of Arkham once again, he’s ready to stage his comeback, but there’s just one problem: Someone already beat him to it, and Basil Karlo is already a massive star. But if that’s true, what’s next for the real Basil? And what does his predicament have to do ...
The Eye Collector #1
The startling first issue of the strangest series on the stands! An ancient being has its curiosity toward Earth reignited when the humans of the Apollo 10 mission make wishes over the Moon. What is this spectral creature, and what does it want with our world? Seeing is believing…
Still struggles with continuity from time to time (the pacing can be a bit jumpy) but I think that's mostly coz Campbell has all these awesome scenes he's envisioned and is desperate to get to. Will not complain about it too much because, like last issue, it gives us some pretty spectacular scenes.
Zatanna #3
Downed by a bullet enchanted with unknown magic, Zatanna is in dire straits. Can she survive by tapping into her newfound power as the Prime Magus of the universe? Meanwhile, Agent Di Manes of the Department of Occult Affairs is preparing for his own grand finale—one that will show Zatanna exactly where he stands.
Voyeur (2025)
As head of security at the upscale Thai resort Koh Kingfisher, Rook has access to absolutely everything. From his office, he can punch into any closed-circuit camera on the island and see what all the guests are up to - and trust us, he's seen it all. Or so he thought.
When Madeline arrives, she instantly captures Rook's attention - an...
The premise is a little tired but this title could still have legs, we just don't see much more than the basic set up in this first issue so there's no telling. The art style of Jae Lee lends itself more to dark and bleak coloring and here that's not the case. It was a bit jarring at first but after a second read it felt more normal. Am I the only one who felt like that at first?
