This series has gotten a ton of hate from loads and loads of people. I'll be honest, I don't get it. Is this series stellar? A classic in the making? No, I don't think so. Is it one of the worst comics being published right now? Absolutely not. It's actually solid. I think a lot of the hate does come from the homophobic/anti-LGBT crowd. That's just an unfortunate reality when it comes to any series that hosts an openly LGBT lead. The reviews under these issues, some of which are novels, don't really convince me of their points. Most of them are written as though the person writing them decided to bash their head in with a hammer before reading the issue. They just essentialize and do their very best to mischaracterize and avoid context, because their points aren't strong enough without deception. That's assuming it is an intentional sort of grift. They could just be morons who can't fully comprehend the average comic book. I know one or two of the consistent reviewers claim to be bi themselves as a way to cover their bases. To assure that their reviews are not of the same character as the blatant homophobic reviews. I'm not saying they're lying, but I am saying that I don't particularly like pick-mes. I try to be careful when I review something and complain about certain tropes, knowing that with the wrong words, I could be fueling the hate train. I wish this consideration was taken by others.
I mean...it kind does seem like you're implying that they're lying about being bi though. And is it so preposterous an idea that people might dislike this run for reasons other than because they're "homophobic/anti-LGBT" or "morons who can't comprehend the average comic book"?
No, I was actually implying they were pick-mes. Which is a member of a marginalized group that appeals to the majority group in order to gain approval and validation from that group. In this case, it'd be bis who use all the homophobic talking points of the obvious bigots in these user review sections, while proclaiming that they're bi, which somehow makes it okay.
I think it's perfectly fine to dislike this run for very valid reasons. It's just that I'm not getting reasons from these people that I find valid. Hence why I said that they haven't convinced me of their points. I see this happen a lot with comics that are popular to be outraged by or hate. People just shut their brains off and start misconstruing things, or outright lying about the contents of the book in order to hate it more.
I mean, you have a V avatar so I know I'm working with an intellectual here, but you should look at the reviews here. If you do, and you don't see any homophobia, you don't know what homophobia is. I'm invested in good bi representation in media and I've listed elsewhere my criticisms of this specific book, in that regard. I'm also invested in countering flagrant homophobia in a fandom I consider myself to be of. I don't want to be hated by my own community, so I will shun those who hate me.
The reason some of my reviews do include bitching about others is because I find it cathartic, and I'm enthusiastically correct. And other times, it's to point out the very real bigotry present on this site, which does further impact the culture, and makes its way into politics, where then the harm becomes tangible in the form of suffering and death. And you may think that's a bit dramatic, but the data backs me up, and I'm well versed in the concept.
