I've seen a lot of mixed reviews. I think people are missing the point here. The point is that the brother who committed suicide was writing a story about fighting a losing battle. That losing battle is life. It seems pretty straightforward to me. I can see why it would be confusing or interpreted differently by others. The main tension is whether or not suicide is selfish or selfless. However we interpret it, the suicidal brother certainly saw life as a losing battle.
