Iron Fist (2017) #3

This series has me dialed in. Mike Perkins is a boss. Even though the first comic didn't grab me with the story, the art always delivers in this series. I love the Mortal Kombat style tournaments in Iron Fist. They are just fun to read.

Luke Cage (2017) #1

Luke Cage #1 is worth the read. I loved it. From beginning to end, the comic showed a familiar Luke Cage while also delving into early character development. David Walker setups a plotline and conflict that makes you wonder where things are going to lead. Blake's art is definitely different from Sanford Greene's, who's art I loved in Power Man and Iron Fist. Blake is very clean in his art, though he doesn't grab me. Marcio Menyz almost tells his own story with his color work. Each page seems to have its own tone that gradually shifts with the story. I can't wait to see how the story unfolds.

Superman (2016) #26

Jul 14, 2017

I’m truly torn on how to grade this book. It’s made me wonder if perhaps I’ve just gotten so spoiled by Tomasi and Gleason’s writing that a new writer leaves this off-brand taste in my mouth. Don’t get me wrong. The story was good in a lot of ways. The flashbacks Clark has with his father resonate with that old familiar tone of what Superman is really about- which is that understanding and communication are the best ways we learn right from wrong. This comic showed with Jon’s brash action that you can’t just punch through every problem. I know one problem I couldn’t quite punch through and that was the art in this issue. I don’t know why every character Godlewski drew had to have a caricature-like jaw and chin but it got distracting. We’ll see if he keeps this up, as he’s also doing art for Superman #27 and #28 titled “Road Trip,” which will bring back the genius of Gleason and Tomasi. Story: 2.5/3 Art : 2/4 Color: 2.5/3 Total: 7/10
