Tank Girl (2018) #1

Here we are! I know! You can't believe it either! years and years of 4 issue stories and exciting capers! We now have the first ongoing, non stopping (not even for toilet breaks) thrill ride that is Action Alley! A continuous never ending rip-roaring adventure fest of BBQ's, Kangaroo Tea Party's, Kitchen cleaning, shopping trips and the maiden voyage of the....TANKMASTER! (everyone in the playground now wants one!) This is great place to start for new and old fans so don't be left if the dust, get issue one and be here at ground zero for a future full of Tank Girl! Full of the classic humour, weird tangents, mystery and balls out violence. But maybe if your a jaded 'Hewll is the only artist for me' type fan then maybe go listen to the gorillaz or something. Disclaimer: Cliff hangers will leave you holding onto that cliff for dear life begging for issue two to arrive! |

Tank Girl (2018) #2

Part Two: After a month of waiting it’s here! (lucky for those of you who have only just joined the series as you don’t have to wait for the next issue.) We pickup exactly where issue 1 left off, Tank Girl seconds away from loosing her head as she tries to thwart the no good hillbilly’s who’ve stolen her brand new Tankmaster. In this issue without giving away spoilers we see Bab’s and her mean right hook, Barney taking charge (always a pleasure to see Barney in action), childhood flashbacks, feral kangaroo’s and the start of the long deadly ride down Action Alley!! As always the art from Brett is superb, the guy knows how to give us action and suspense that’s easy to follow. I get great pleasure out of all the sound effects he illustrates. The fact that this is the start of an ongoing series really gives each issue room to breathe and the set plot points up. If I’ve learnt anything from my years of devouring Tank Girl books it’s that nothing is ever pointless, it all leads to something and all these obvious plot threads and all the intricate subtle ones will lead to some head clanging surprises I’m sure. As juvenile the humour can be with Tank Girl there are moments of general emotion especially during this issue’s flash back’s. I’m excited to see the series unfold and give us character growth and new surprises. People who want the same old glory days rehashed will be disappointed, this is new and its building towards something (a lot like that tv show ‘the wire’, nothing much happens week to week but it’s not insignificant and is always building towards a payoff). Time Fly’s when you’re having fun, which means with a blink of an eye we are faced yet again hanging on to cliff Richard and waiting for part three…Everybody dies in part three...WHAT?!?!?! SPOILERS! |

Tank Girl (2018) #3

Ba ba ba ba Barbara! Part 3 and right off the bat we are stuck square in the middle of Action Alley without a power coupling and waves of creepy mutants storming the Tank Master (If you’re confused then come on pick up or download issues 1 & 2!). Find out the mystery behind Barbara and what exactly what is in a Marsofu burger! This on going series is only on its third issue but the pace hasn’t dwindled and before I knew it I was staring at yet another cliff hanger desperately wanting the next issue. The writing as always has the gang playing of each other perfectly. Tank Girl as we’ve come to expect is keeping everyone in line and the plot moving. Ok...I don’t mean to make a habit of this but in the past I’ve mention Brett Parson and his ability to distill a basic sound effect perfectly in the medium of words and typography...well...I’m going it again. How can you not marvel at Brett’s skill. I mean how can you not love ‘dinky dinky dink dink!’ For the sound of a chain link fence? This sort of thing is subtle in comics but it’s so easy to get wrong and that’s what I love about Tank Girl comics. They get it right and not just the gorgeous visuals and the humour it’s the little things like the pop culture references, nuggets of 70s/80s British children’s tv, over the top glorious violence and of course the sound effects. I shouldn’t have to convince anyone who’s read issues 1 & 2 to read this but to those who haven’t I suggest you catch up, you won’t regret it. |
