Nightwing (2016) #78

10/10 Bravo! Dick Grayson can carry a story by his wholesomeness and goodness alone. He is the heart of the DC universe. Nightwing was hyped to be the best series this year and I am happy to say Tom Taylor met the expectations. If this continues I might prioritize Nightwing over Daredevil again.

Who are the people who helps you when you fall? Who are your safety nets? In Bludhaven, there is none... until Nightwing came. The true start of the Nightwing run of Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas(colors) and Wess Abbott(letters). Rendondo's art encapsulates the ease of movement of DC's greatest acrobat. Everytime Nightwing moves there is ease, gracefulness and flow in every panel. The color has been my favorite since the pass issue. Adriano Lucas needs to be mentioned. He gives this issue (and the last one) its' life. Bludhaven is not a copy cat Gotham because it can clearly be seen in the colors. It reminds me of New York (park, streets, alleyways). The letters is clear and there is a great one in a fight scene. You can't ask for more. Taylor's redemption tour from killing Dick in the most stupid way in Injustice continues. He understands the character he writes. But more importantly, he loves him. Or I think he does. As his run continues, maybe I will forgive him. Maybe. If the theme of this issue is Dick Grayson, the heart of DC and the Bat family vs Bludhaven, the city with no heart. I can't wait for the next one: Dick Grayson vs Heartless, the man with no heart. Anyone call up Scott Snyder, Taylor is doing his own Black Mirror and Jim Gordon, Jr. LOL There is sticky note: "DAN: YOU ARE FIRED!!!" This series keeps on firing shots: Lobdell, King and now my hero DiDio ;D Anyway, it's just great that Nightwing is DC's best right now.

Spoilers incoming, A lot of it. What we got: - Cool Nightwing gadgets. We are this close from Dick using a Bo staff like the cartoons and tv series. - Great Bat family moments coupled with our favorite new doggo, Haley, getting her much deserved walk. Who's a good girl? - Tim being Tim. I recommend this to the Drake fans. I know there is a lot of you begging for content. This is some great content. - The layout of Dick's apartment. My personal favorite. Those two pages were perfect. This is the thing that hardcore fans love. - Nightwing villains (Surprise kids! Nightwing has a rogues' gallery before the New52!) - Dick and Babs' law degrees. Dick's police history. Backstory. - Babs' cartoon face. NEW MEME INCOMING! - Heartless looks cool and threatening as hell. Thank Darkseid that he or she isn't another one of Blockbuster's lackeys. - Most importantly, BABS STAYED IN DICK'S APARTMENT, but Dick slept on the coach. False alarm. Put alert level to DEFCON 4. What we didn't get: - Dick and Babs "relationship". It's our business, Babs! Why do you think I buy these comics? You are losing to Kori. - MOAR fight scenes! The team up fight scene was like drinking water from an oasis after days of travelling the desert. It was so awesome that I can't get enough of it. Conclusion: I won't review the art, colors and lettering, because right now let's get used to the fact that the art team will always do great things. They have given not just life but also an identity to a character that lost a lot if it this past decade. Taylor hits the heart of every Bat family fans. Reminding us that behind the masks and cowls and their very grumpy mentor, they are still teenagers and adults who love enjoying life in the company of each other, whether it be as civilians or superheroes, like a family.

Art 3/3 Colors and Letters 3/3 Writing 2/4 Total 8/10 As I am reading this issue, I experienced numerous conflicting emotions. Not because of the art, coloring nor the letters. The art team has done magnificent work for the past four issues. Bruno Redondo (artist), Adriano Lucas (colors) and Wes Abbott (letters) deserve all the praises being given to them. It will no doubt be a blessing for them to continue working on Nightwing. As I said time and time again, they gave an identity to Bludhaven as a city. Ever walked in Tokyo, Paris or New York, and exclaimed to yourself “Wow!”. That is what I felt looking at Bludhaven. The more amazing part is they can do more. A lot more. They have been restricted to tight spaces: alleyways, camps and apartments. In my humble opinion, the fight scenes in this issue, though unbelievably beautiful, will still be forgotten, while Bludhaven will stay in our hearts and minds. My main concern is the writing, not to say Tom Taylor has been horribly lacking. He gave us three very great issues. One of which will be my favorite for years to come. Now, let us get to it. The criticism I will say have been said by some reviewers. Tom Taylor plays safe in his writing. I will repeat it. Tom Taylor plays safe in his writing. He lets one facet of the character, in this case Dick Grayson’s kindness, to carry his story. Most of the elements he adds in the story have already been made or told. And, foremost of all, the new things he adds dwindle to the once done past. Anyone reading this should understand I am not saying the story is bad. At its’ lowest it will be an average story, but the writer’s lack of bravery to go beyond traveled horizons is discouraging. You might say “Tom Taylor did what you wanted in the last page”. I will give my thoughts on that below because spoilers… Spoilers (Read the issue. It is good. You can buy it for the art alone.) Let me start with how I appreciate that they modified the escrima sticks to be an all-purpose tool: grappling gun, taser, laser and suction cup. Very cool. You know what is not cool? Tom Taylor can not write Nightwing as a competent hero. Nightwing had made small mistakes in the past issues, but in this issue, oh boy, did he make a lot of them, big ones. 1. Underestimating an enemy, which he does not know, and thus getting his brain scrambled again. This is not funny Taylor. Ric is not funny. Are you Tom King? 2. Underestimating an enemy, which he does not know, and thus getting his brain scrambled again. This is not funny Taylor. Ric is not funny. Are you Tom King? Déjà vu… 3. Having to ask Bludhaven for help when Nightwing has not done anything to help them. I get it, Taylor. You watched Dunkirk and you thought it was emotional and uplifting. In this issue, it is forced and undeserved. If Bludhaven is only rotten because of those in power, news flash, it is just another modern city in the world. Nightwing has been Batman, yet Taylor writes him like he is still Robin. I would feel safer if Barbara Gordon or Tim Drake was the lead of the story. Past writers wrote a lot more competent Nightwing and they made their Nightwing make big mistakes. I do not like Dick Grayson as this emotional mess that rushes first before thinking. He should be kind and sometimes angry, but always rational and in-control. Lastly, there is Heartless and Melinda Zucco, and I have got to admit Taylor should have just chose one. Both clog the story. This issue had way more words than answers. I do not care a lot about any of them and two is making it worse (yes even the half sister thing; it so cliche in comics). I do not know who, what, how or why Heartless is. While, I do not know how or why Melinda is connected to anything at all. My wish is that the story simply focused on Dick and Alfred. This run should be Dick honoring Alfred through what he could do with Alfred’s inheritance. Taylor is crumbling beneath the weight of his story and the shaky foundations he made. Dick Grayson is one of the world’s greatest problem solver. Mr. Tom Taylor definitely needs some help with proving that. Thank you for reading my opinion. Have a nice day.

It is good but you can skip it. Mandatory Bat crossovers are a pain the ass if you are not reading the main Bat title. You can come back in December and continue with the main story. In short, buy if you are following Fear State or in need of Dick every month.
