Adventure Time (2012) #1
Jan 22, 2016 |
This first issue really focuses around establishing the plot and it does come with the assumption that the audience knows prior relationships. If you're looking to jump into the world of Adventure Time you may wish to start elsewhere, but if you're familiar with the show you'll find it embodied well in this comic. I look forward to seeing where this series will go since the Ice King does have such a tragic backstory. Even though it wasn't hinted at just yet, I feel as though it will be hard to tell a story about him and ignore his past. It's something that always seems to haunt him. Like much of the other Adventure Time publications, I'm positivethis one will be a fantastic addition to the fandom and that this series has potential since the Ice King is a significant figure although we will have to see in later issues just how thoroughly they explore him. |

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey: Rebirth #1
Jul 20, 2016 |
The creative team behind this issue did, in my opinion, a superb job. While this issue does take time to set up Barbara's legacy, it is by no means lacking in action and plot development. It's not a title that feels too gritty or dark but does well to keep in mind an upbeat Batgirl working alongside the more abrasive Black Canary. Everything feels right with this comic so far as the writing and art mesh really well together. I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this title but I'm glad to say that I both thoroughly enjoyed it and am already looking forward to the next installment! |

Black Jack Ketchum #1
Dec 6, 2015 |
It's too early to tell what this series will yield. We've got a lot of questions and very few answers, but this is only the first issue. The shadowy figures lurking in the background, in combination with Ketchum's hunt for his doppelganger, certainly push forward the momentum of the plot. I'm excited to see where the creative team will take this, but hopefully the narrative will move towards a more linear fashion. How Ketchum was, at one moment, being chased by the nebulous Dusters to being swallowed by a hellish steam engine"I'm not quite sure. |

Black Road #1
Apr 15, 2016 |
It's worth noting that in the beginning "Black Road" is titled as a mystery and this element is something that we have yet to encounter. While this duo finds their way further north, hopefully this component will be introduced. I'm sure that with it will come welcomed sense eeriness to the title. With visions of violence and burning churches throughout the issue, there is surely something heinous waiting around the corner. Ultimately, "Black Road" has promise and I'm curious to see where it goes next as Magnus and his Guardian Angel venture further north to along the Hammaruskk Coast. |

One of the key advantages of this narrative choice is that multiple stories can be easily managed simultaneously. However, the downside to this is that it detracts from a sense of unity early on. At the moment, we understand that Louise is having financial trouble in London, hunting a former agent in the Middle East, and is currently a prisoner. How these narratives come together is still pretty unclear but I'm certain that as the series progresses the gaps between these stories will steadily become seamless. I'm interested in seeing how Louise got involved with supernatural mercenaries and how she came to be captured, but I feel as though there may be some time before we gain a clearer picture of this team's vision. |

Dragon Age: Magekiller #1
Dec 19, 2015 |
I feel this issue's largest downfall is that it spends a lot of time setting up the plot, but what the narrative lacks in quality it makes up for in potential. Fantasy worlds always seem ripe for exploration and story telling because of the larger imaginative space that creative teams can pull from. This issue doesn't dazzle but I feel that this series has the potential to shine when being viewed as a whole. Something tells me that as this series moves forward we will find some of Tessa's words ringing true, "Everything has a price. Everything has a toll." |

Justice League (2016) #1
Jul 20, 2016 |
I say this is an awesome start to the title since it jumps right into the plot. There is no time spent talking about backgrounds or legacies but rather the audience is thrown into a whirlwind of global scalecatastrophes. Not only is the plot itself superb but the factors that contribute to this issue work very well together. I believe Justice Leagueis another strong addition to the plethora of titles that DC has chosen to relaunch. The strong writing and awesome art do well to create a series worth continuing. My biggest problem seems to be that with so many strong titles being launched it's hard to choose a favorite. |

With this in mind, I look forward to seeing more of the environments that they have crafted. While Tajo and Della are still in the ocean, I have a strong feeling that their mother, Stel, is close to the surface and that we'll get so see a whole new perspective very soon. It must come without surprise that "Low" is one of the titles that I look forward to the most this year as it is, quite literally, coming to show its audience a whole new world. |

Low (2014) #12
Mar 20, 2016 |
While the arcs of this series have been crafted splendidly, the audience is left wondering how Tajoand Della will come to be reunited with their mother. In a sense each group is in a different world and banding together will surely prove a difficult task. The team behind this series has gone on to produce an excellent series that I can't recommend enough. I look forward to seeing where they'll take us as we begin to explore a whole new landscape that's already filled with danger. |

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1
Nov 28, 2015 |
If you've been a fan of G. Willow Wilson's work on the highly acclaimed Ms Marvel, you'll certainly find Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur to be well within the same wheelhouse. This story revolves around a girl who is having a hard time fitting in but the narrative doesn't focus on this single attribute. The only reason that this issue did not score a higher rating is that, like many first issues, it begins to build the story arc. I feel this series will begin to pick up pace as Moon Girl finds something red, scaly, and prehistoric dropped into her everyday life. |

This is a series that feels as though it has potential, but unlike many titles I can't quite tell where this one is heading. After reading "Pencil Head," my socks weren't knocked off but I am interested enough to continue reading. It's a breath of fresh air to see a character that's a bit mundane and ordinary, but I do feel that Poodwaddle has the potential to surprise his readers in dealing with the threats around the corner. I'd recommend "Pencil Head" to anyone looking to get away from their usual titles and explore something new. |

Red Sonja (2016) #1
Jan 24, 2016 |
The only thing that I feel holding this issue back is that it is a first issue so a fair bit of time is spent developing the plot, and, when dealing with a action driven character like Red Sonja, this isn't always ideal. However, I am pretty optimistic about where these two will take the character. Even though first issues do generally move slowly, what this issue lacks in kick-butt action is made up for in potential. I'm certainly optimistic about where they will go with the series. |

Saga's creative team has woven such an astounding universe and I am beyond excited to see where this new arc takes our protagonists. There are still many loose ends that were left unresolved before this hiatus and, like myself, I'm sure audiences are clamoring to see where this series will go. Because within issue #31 one of the largest secrets in the series begins to be revealed and key players have still yet to make an appearance. |

I feel that "Snow Blind" will offer its readersa story that we will wish wasn't contained to only four issues. The narrativeis fast paced and full of questions worth answering. Hopefully with the issues to come we will get more insight to the family's violent past, but as the opening lines say, "You can't know me, not really. I lived a whole life before you and half a life since." |

Swamp Thing (2016) #1
Jan 6, 2016 |
Even though my favorite Swamp Thing was the version that enveloped all of Gotham in vegetation, and delivered a serious beat down to Batman, this most recent version is still an amazing reflection of the character. The creative team does an awesome job of staying in touch with the character's roots and provides the audience with an incarnation that is true to his history. This remains a solid start with lots of potential, but returning to his origins may take some getting use to because we've had such a variety of creative teams take on the character in a short span of time. |

The Violent #1
Dec 12, 2015 |
While many of us have not been in situations like that of Mason and Becky, the creative team behind this title makes it easier to imagine what they have to endure. These characters know that there is a life of crime and drug abuse waiting for them to slip up and fall into old patterns. Mason and Becky aren't people who are far removed from this lifestyle but rather they're fresh out of it. They're battling everyday with the temptation to return to what they know, and from this stems turmoil in their relationship and conflict with a world waiting for them to make a mistake. |

The Violent #3
Mar 8, 2016 |
Being only on issue three, there has not been much time for the creative team to lose their momentum. When I reviewed issue one, I claimed that Brisson,Gorham, and Galandare creating a narrative both superb and tragic in nature and this still remains true. The art and dialogue fit so well together that I can't help but give it praise. In unison these two elements form the tragic nature of this story that act as a testament to the craft of the series. While it's still too early to praise the title collectively, there's nothing stopping me that saying that each issue, and surely those to come, will be both emotionally charged and physically violent. |

Tokyo Ghost #3
Nov 19, 2015 |
The creative team behind Tokyo Ghost leaves the audience with a sense of wonder and intrigue surrounding the status of Japan. There is promise for the characters as their hopes are coming to bear fruit, yet there is a subtle sense of foreboding as the protagonists settle in this new, and still unfamiliar, land. While they become entranced with their new lifestyle and blooming relationship, there is a sense of more sinister machinations at play and that Debora and Teddy are not fully aware. |

However, in conjunction this creative team has produced a noteworthy comic. While issue #1 seems a bit hit-and-miss, Thompson and Olivetti do have a noticeable synergy. Thompson's shorter writing does well to not overpower the art of Olivetti, and Olivetti does a phenomenal job of showing the audience Flash's cosmic adventures. This series has potential but it may take some time for Thompson to find his stride. Consistent action may be great for the first issue but being non-stop may not be sustainable. |

Wonder Woman (2016) #1
Jun 22, 2016 |
While we do not entirely know where the story arc is headed, we can guess that it's going to be ripe with tension as the one that Diana seeks eventually finds her. Rucka and Sharp give us the beginning in this issue, but they leave us wondering how Diana will come to negotiate help from someone who she has never quite got along with. Additionally, we must wonder how the paths of Steve and Diana will come to intersect as their objectives are far from similar. This issue will certainly serve as the springboard into a much more engaging and action-packed story arc. Personally, I look forward to seeing how Wonder Woman is developed after such a monumental run during the New 52. |
