Arcade Kings (2023) #1

May 18, 2023

As a big fan and life-long player of video games, the inspiration they provide Arcade Kings is certainly not lost on me. Transitional text is done in a classic 8-bit style. A map of Infinity City looks a lot like maps of classic video games. The fighting game Joe plays is clearly influenced by games like Street Fighter. Some of the action plays out much like some of the classic beat'em-ups we all played as kids. Burnett pays a loving homage to these games that made us, and it's the little nods to its inspirations that add to its heart.

Avengers (2023) #1

May 17, 2023

Avengers #1 provides a bold and provocative new beginning for some old friends. The action starts early and doesn't let up, but the story is never sacrificed for its sake.

Buffy: The Last Vampire Slayer (2023) #1

Aug 1, 2023

Gorgeous artwork from Roig paired with Gillys writing makes for one powerhouse team. Staying true to the original cannon, Gilly brings us an alternate universe with nods to fan favorite characters and introducing us to new ones to love. This new mini-series written by Casey Gilly is a continuation from her story line in Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer (2022) and Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer Special, which takes place 5 years since the events in issue #4 of Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer. Casey seems to be gearing up to finally give our beloved Buffy an ending to her story and bringing us full circle with our new heroine, Thess. I cant wait to see whats up next.

Captain Marvel (2019) #49

May 11, 2023

Death is (hardly) ever permanent, so my only concern coming out of this issue would be if Binary is immediately brought back, the opportunity for the exploration of the emotional weight of this experience for Carol will be lost. Im interested to see how Carols new power level shifts the dynamics between her and other cosmically-powered (or godly) beings in the Marvel universe, and look forward to seeing what's in store for the character!

Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest (2023) #1

Jul 5, 2023

This is a great storyline to follow up Kelly Thompsons run of Captain Marvel. After battling in the War of the Realms, teaming up with the X-Men, fighting alongside The Avengers and The Marvels, going head-to-head with The Brood, Carol has been one busy girl. With everything she has already faced and overcome, I am excited to see where Ann takes Captain Marvels story. The first chapter of this five issue mini-series is packed full of the action that we have come to see from our powerhouse female superhero.Paolos artwork sets up a great dynamic of the dark dangers of space and the vibrant colors of hope on Earth. There looks to be a lot of jam-packed adventure coming up in this storyline, so get ready to go higher, further, faster!

Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest (2023) #2

Aug 9, 2023

Ann has given us an intense, action-fueled storyline filled with dynamic characters. I love to see the internal monologues that cross the minds of Carol and Nitro as they figure out what their role in this story is. She showcases that even the strongest heroes or villains can doubt their choices and that makes them just as vulnerable and human and the angsty teens intertwined in this story. Paolos art is stunning and drives home the all the turmoil and suspense driven in Anns writing.I am loving this story arc and I cannot wait for the next issue with the introduction of the Feral Five!

Ghostlore (2023) #1

May 10, 2023

I wasn't sure what to expect going in, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one. There are clearly some concepts at play in this world that will require much more exposition, but Bunn has given us just enough information to wet the palate without overindulging. It could have been very easy to go overboard on exposition with this world where there is clearly a lot to explain, but both the reader and Lucas will have to uncover the bits and pieces as they go.

Rogue & Gambit (2023) #4

Jun 14, 2023

The artwork is gorgeous and everything we have come to know and expect from an X-Men comic.  I love seeing more of the Rogue & Gambit storyline continuing from Mr. & Mrs. X as well as their ordeals in X-Men and Knights of X. I cant wait to see what happens next for spicy duo.

Rogue & Gambit (2023) #5

Jul 12, 2023

This issue featured stunning art from Carlos and a captivating story from Stephanie. I am loving what this powerhouse team has brought to life for my favorite mutant couple. After everything that they have been through, I love watching them continuously fight for their love. They have already overcome so much but we know that nothing has come easily for these two.Destiny is going to force Rogue to make some difficult decisions and I am eager to see if Rogue & Gambit will continue to defy the odds and make it through what Powerbroker, Destiny, and the universe still have in store for them both in this story arc and inX-Men: Hellfire Gala 2023.

Rogue Sun #13

Jun 20, 2023

Parrott makes a disturbing point about somebody else being able to handle your life and relationships better than you.  Abel and Renna put some excellent touches on a rogues gallery of nightmare characters, making me really want to see more of them.  Dylan and Caleb's struggle to maintain control over their coveted “prize” was a real highlight of the story (including the ensuing battle/team-up with Demonika).

Scarlet Witch (2023) #6

Jul 12, 2023

Everything that Wanda Maximoff has already overcome has only made her stronger. She is a survivor. Her moments with Wiccan in this issue are beautifully written andI loved seeing her dynamic with her son. Her son and his husband are trying to make things better than how they found them, and Wanda is able to provide some thoughtful guidance that made for an impactful scene.Wanda really got to shine in these moments with her son, and it was a great contrast to the fierce Scarlet Witch.Looking forward to seeing what else Steve and the Last Door have in store for the Queen of Chaos.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin: The Lost Years #4

Jun 27, 2023

Gallant, Keane, and Bishop take the soft edges off the Turtles' style, and Eastman and Waltz hit us with an issue of TMNT that contains zero pizza and not a cowabunga in sight. The next generation of ninja turtles is a shot of fresh blood for the franchise, with new potential heroes, abilities, and pizza preferences that I can't wait to read about (is Hawaiian style still a thing in the TMNT future?)

The Vampire Slayer (2022) #15

Jun 20, 2023

The dark coloring and art work bring back vibes of the Hellmouth from the original Buffyverse. While featuring the characters we all know and love since Buffy the Vampire Slayer first aired in 1997, this series takes place in an entirely new universe. This alternate universe, which takes place in Universe 37, also known as the Willowverse (referenced in Hellmouth Part 5 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer #31), was set up in Trust the Process, the prologue to our current storyline. The Vampire Slayer #15 from Boom! Studios is a fun glimpse into the Buffy multiverse, and I would love to see what windows to other worlds we will get to see into in the future.

Wolverine (2020) #33

May 10, 2023

Overall, this issue does a great job of establishing the threats coming up against Beast, and sets the stage for what is surely going to be a complicated and interesting confrontation. With this level of storytelling and art in play, I can't wait to read the next issue!
