Skyward (2018) #1 |
Apr 19, 2018 |
On first read-through, Skyward reminds me of Animosity from AfterShock Comics – a simple concept that has near limitless scope for expansion. And, to that end, I can only hope that Henderson and Garbett follow in Animosity's footsteps and focus on the story and characters first and the gimmick second. |

If you haven't got on board with Animosity yet, I simply do not understand why. This is clearly a classic series that will be remembered for years to come. Sep 29, 2017 |
Right from the start, this first issue feels like it's simply racing to the end and that it doesn't want you to have a chance to stop and look at the world it is trying to create. Much like the previous series, Nothing But The Truth has some real potential, but it also feels like it has stumbled out of the blocks here. |

I just hope the creative team don't retread over stories that have already been covered by their obvious influences. There are so many flavours of other work in this book including Power Rangers, X-Men, Chronicle and Incredible Hulk alongside an ominous reference to George Orwell's 1984. Itll be interesting to see how this story evolves, thats for sure. |

Night Owl Society #1 |
Apr 25, 2017 |
Ive learned over the years not to judge a series by its first issue, and while it is a little bit clichd at times, Night Owl Society definitely has the potential to become a great series. Yes, the characters all seem to fill generic archetypes, but thats true of most great characters in the beginning, at least. I can definitely see this becoming an enjoyable mashup of The Castaways and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and theres no denying that this is a solid start for a series with a ton of potential. |

Honestly, Animal Noir is clearly a passion project for its creators, and I don't like dismissing others' work out of hand, but in my opinion this is simply not an enjoyable book. Young Terrorists #2 |
Dec 14, 2016 |
There are also some spectacularly squandered opportunities here. Case in the point: one of the female characters has given herself a retractable penis. This could potentially be a great concept if it was used to explore the nature of sexuality, but it is instead just played for gross out humour against the character the reader is supposed to relate too. The whole thing just feels crass and wrong, but to be fair it also feels unintentional and slightly nave. |

While this issue reads as a good endpoint for the series, thankfully it isn't, and almost feels like a kind of soft reset for the book. I'll be honest, this has been one of the hardest reviews I've have had to write, hence its briefness. The issue, while not necessarily “bad” in any significant way, reads like a love letter to fans of the series, which is great for creators to do, but jumping on from this point will just definitely turn newcomers off the series. I would recommend going back to read past issues if you do fancy it and saving this one for when you are a more educated fan. |

The Forevers #1 |
Sep 14, 2016 |
The only complaint I have about this issue, aside from the fairly uninspiring characters, is the lack of backstory that is required to hook readers in. If this could have been expanded upon, then the book would have been far more memorable. As it stands, The Forevers appears to be a mash-up of franchises including Highlander, Cabin in the Woods and various others. It definitely has a lot of potential though, albeit potential that hasn't been fully realised just yet. |

That is what lets me know this book is special. Even in filler issues I still cant wait to read the next page. No panel feels wasted, no dialogue feels clunky. You can't help but get the feeling that that this project is very close to the creative team's heart and that they are trying to put their vision into press as well as they possibility can. My only criticism is that some of the plot and characters do seem a little bit too one-dimensional in a well-built, multi dimensional world. That said, I imagine this will change over time as we get to know everyone a bit more. |

Ultimately, this issue isn't quite as good as the first two, but it is still brilliant in its own right.
