Matthew Atkinson's Comic Reviews

One thing I have always liked about Annuals was the fact that someone could tell a longer, more complete story inside of one issue. (Their rarity is another fun factor, as they tend to come out in "Fifth Wednesday" weeks.) There has been a lot of significant stories over the years told in Annuals (Sue and Reed Richards' wedding comes to mind, just off the top of my head; as well as the birth of Lightning Lad's and Saturn Girl's children) Certainly, I am glad that I only have to wait a week for the next issue. Otherwise I would get really frustrated because I loved this book so much. I hope you have enjoyed it as well.

The scene where Superman removes Krypto from the Zone and brings him to space to bathe him in the yellow sun rays is the most moving page drawn in this series so far, without any question. The sequences where Krypto is also protecting and watching over Clark are good too. But the rest of the book is of such mediocre quality to bring the overall rating for the book down, and the future will not be bright if the stories don't get more substantial soon.

A solid book overall, I hope to continue to see the Man of Steel's development more and more into the true icon we all know and love (or hate; he seems to have as many people that dislikes him as likes him.) The Zero issue should be interesting and to the future, I would like to see some of his classic foes come back (any chance of the Composite Superman, maybe?) Until next month".

The art keeps this book from having a score that is only average. I'm glad now that this arc is concluded as overall; it ranks as some of the worst work Paul Levitz has completed in a long time. As we still have the unresolved plotline of the Fatal Five tie-in (from five issues ago), we may still get some good stuff ahead yet. I hope so. I am a huge Legion fan, but if the book continues to be this mediocre, I see I ending in the fourth wave.

A solid book, especially for those like myself who like a little of everything (although I always love a little more story background to books and less emphasis on action sequences; one of the things I liked about Swan's art was that he would use three panels where other artists might use five.) Superman (as a series) is one of the new 52's most consistent titles. I admit I am looking forward as to how the Zero issue for this one ties in with the Zero for Action. If this is the first Superman book you buy, it stands out as a better one.

Artistically probably one of the best books of the run, and plot-wise, a book that I will read again (for the fourth time this week; believe me, this does not happen often) once I have completed this review, (and I might just pull out last month's to read again with it), it is only the cover that keeps me from giving this one a virtual perfect score. I am beginning to wish this title could be changed to Action Comics Weekly again. Please check it out.

I have to admit, I have had a fanboy crush on Duplicate Girl (formerly known as Triplicate Girl, Duo Damsel, Triad, etc..) since she was in Adventure Comics. (Also Supergirl, Saturn Girl and Dream Girl and Buffy, but I am a fickle man at heart.) With exception to stories of her involving the Legion Academy, you don't see much of her anymore. I am very happy to see her and Bouncing Boy again. Now, to the final word: This is a fantastic book for what is ultimately going to be the middle act for the story arc. I think that when the time comes to publish this in a trade paperback, it has the potential to help get new fans to the book. In the end, isn't that the goal? Until next time, folks"

Well done, gentlemen. This book saved the storyline and let's me know that creatively, Kara is in good hands. I hope you find that as well. Until next month"

A solid book, but the writing does bring down the overall rating a bit. After the Worldkillers storyline, and even the promise of last month's issue as Supergirl has finally found a friend on this strange planet, this title can use a slightly better scripting effort next month. (However, Mahmud and Dave, keep up the solid work!)

This was not the best issue and not the worst issue I have ever read. This probably qualifies as the worst issue of the current New 52 Action run, however. Considering what it has been up against to this point, that still puts it in the above-average category, and I hope that if there are more stories with POTUS Superman, they are a bit more interesting.

This series has been really solid since the beginning. This issue, which was what I term a "bridge issue," was well above the usual quality for books of this nature that flow between story arcs. All I can say is, if a book can be this good between stories (see my earlier review for Legion of Super-Heroes #5 for an example of a book that does not flow well), then the quality of the books during major arcs are good indeed. Well done, gentlemen.

Worth the 2,99 $ (CDN) price of admission. After the letdown of the last issue, the title is improving again, and I anticipate that this book may soon be in the top 10 of DC titles if the next storyline is as good as anticipated.

Morrison and Morales are quickly becoming synonymous with the word "greatness." Although I have known Morrsion's work for years, I have only recently begun to recognize and appreciate the genius that is Rags Morales. I will continue to look for more of his work for my collection. If you are not a Superman fan, the work by these two makes it worth the price of the book in the long run, and you may find yourself surprised by the Man of Steel after all. Until next time"

The best one yet in this current series, this has been an uplifting change after the disappointment and emptiness I felt from the last issue. I find it great that newer members of the Legion are getting action and some of the spotlight, especially after we were introduced to them in the last issues of Adventure Comics before it was cancelled last August. As mentioned above, I have a feeling that we are going to be introduced soon into a major story arc involving the Dominators and I recommend that new readers get into it now so they can be spellbound with the rest of us.

This series has been, in my humble opinion (no bias here, I mean, just because Supergirl is my all-time favourite), one of the best series of the New 52. They were given an opportunity to begin from scratch, and this series has given Kara her own rogue's gallery, as well as a different take on her arrival. She seems to have accepted that fact that Earth shall be her home, because in this issue, she could have flown anywhere when she left Argo and she CHOSE to return to Earth. She remains a fun distraction from the dull trivialities of regular life, and hopeful, the conclusion will be as good as this issue was.
