While the pacing of this title is still a little slow to my liking, the mystery behind Abe's transformation (and perhaps his origin) coupled with the fantastic art of Sebastin Fiumara make this worth reading. Even though the direction of this series isn't entirely clear, this issue gives us some very good exploration of how the normal people of the Mignolaverse reacts to the apocalypse while giving us a good lead in Abe Sapien. With the expert art of Sebastian Fiumara and the colors of Dave Stewart, this issue is elevated to another level thanks to their great storytelling as well. Recommended. Read Full Review

Abe Sapien: Dark and Terrible Part 2 of 3 is a far superior book than its predecessor in every aspect. It's packed with plot, great art and actually stars Abe. Although the story might feel a bit all over the place (you move rather quickly from one setting to another), it is still very well written and organized in a way that is easy to understand. The art by Scott Allie is really fantastic: there are moments where Mignola lets Allie tell a bit of the story and the way these particular panels are organized is in an organized and well structured way. It is, in general, very well done. Overall the story is entertaining and is definitely worth a look if you enjoy Abe's character and are a bit curious about his identity. Read Full Review

It was interesting that even though the first place Abe went to was a church in order to rest, the priest there was actually welcoming to him. What was happening around the world was nothing new to the man which was why he wasn't scared when he first encountered Abe. Though we then switch over to the B.P.R.D. officers who are hunting Abe thinking he is the cause for everything happening. Something to point out is odd for them to do because he's one of them and is very humane. Here Allie was able to show what people really thought of monsters like himself and how they are lumped together as trouble and nothing else. Even more so when the towns people turned on their own priest for asking them to be at peace with those who were transformed. Read Full Review

It looks as though "Abe Sapien," or at least its debut story arc "Dark and Terrible," is shaping up to be mostly for hardcore Hellboy readers. Fans of Abe himself will be pleased by this issue, as it's very Abe-centric and teases quite a bit more about his past and future. More casual fans, however, may be lost in the continuity upon which the issue mostly relies. It remains to be seen where future issues take the story, but for now, "Abe Sapien" is only worth reading for dedicated fans that want a deeper look at the impact of recent events in the Hellboy universe.
