I really enjoy this comic month after month and actually dig it more than the exploits of Mignola's other more famous character in Hellboy In Hell. The writing gets you right into Abe's head, you feel his emotions, his fear, his sadness that his brother Hellboy has not returned while these monsters surface all over the planet, and his pity for the human race. The artwork by Max Fiumara and Dave Stewart is pretty amazing in that it looks totally original and is beautifully colored but you can tell it is set in Mignola's world. It's almost like someone turned on the lights in some of Mignola's art for Hellboy, setting a different tone for Abe's series. Although personal feelings towards this book were relatively ambiguous at first, particularly for someone who is a huge fan of the Mignolaverse, recent issues have solidified an opinion of brilliance. Issue #5 in particular demonstrated what this series is really trying to say, and where the creative team seems to want go with the story. Although the aspects concerning Abe's origins are vaguely delivered and not often related back to earlier revelations regarding his beginnings and purpose, the rest of the story provides for a profound commentary of Hell on Earth that stands in stark contrast to that portrayed in B.P.R.D., the series to which Abe Sapien almost seems to serve as a "companion". Also, the proportions are on point. The perspectives are interesting in certain panels. A lot of Abe running and mutant coyotes hunched over, about to pounce. This is part two of the story arc, but really there aren't a lot of details from the first issue that you need to know to read this issue and the characters recap the events all on their own as well. Also, like I said before, this is going to be a collector's item for any Mignolaverse fan. Some of the aspects of this issue, like the approach to the death of a character and the mystery behind it, could have been worked much better, yet the beautiful art, colorization and the subtle horror and philosophical approach saves it from being a small dud. Read Full Review

Overall, a solid issue of Abe Sapien. Action is light, but the dialogue is strong. It's kind of a sci-fi murder mystery, so many should find it entertaining. It's almost time for some big action pieces however. Read Full Review

Abe Sapien #5 seems like a bit of a throwaway issue. There isn't too much going on, and with all the excitement over in the B.P.R.D. side, Abe's place on comic shelves seems a little unnecessary at the moment. Let's hope the hiatus can re-ignite Abe's fire this October. Read Full Review
