This issue is quite different to what you would expect, but that does not mean that it is disappointing at all. The main issue so far for me is there is just a lack of narrative tension so far, but, as you pointed out, that is sort of the intent. Regardless, it does dampen what otherwise was a rock solid affair, with exceptional art from Fiumara and Stewart. No less, a solid buy, just not a spectacular one. Read Full Review

It's easy to recommend this series to new readers since it basically starts over with this issue and manages to recap the previous events at the same time. It's kind of difficult for me to recommend this to anyone that just finished the previous series because it's so similar. I didn't dislike this issue, but the dj vu was a bit much. I couldn't place it at first, but when I sat down to write the review it hit me that I had basically written this already which changed how I wrote about the issue. In terms of story, "Abe Sapien" still feels like it's catering to the Mignola-verse completists. So long as that's enough to bring in the sales, fair enough. The big reason to read the title right now, though, is Fiumara's art, which is guaranteed to knock your socks off. If he and brother Max Fiumara keep trading story arcs as the main artist, nothing could happen for months on end and I'd stick around. If a Fiumara brother draws it, I'll read it.
