Abe uncovers connections between the hell on earth he and the B.P.R.D. are experiencing, and blood-soaked Mayan legends of the origins of man and the end of the world.
The art is spectacular, Sebastian Fiumara and Dave Stewart brighten up and detail Abe's world like we haven't seen in the B.P.R.D. Universe before. The shadows and shapes of Mignola's art are gone, replaced with daytime desert scenes and detailed features. The cover art by Max Fiumara, brother of artist Sebastian, invokes the feeling of old pulp-horror comics…right up my alley! As I said earlier Abe Sapien may not be for everyone, but as a fan of horror indies and Mignola's Hellboy Universe in general, it is becoming a personal favorite of mine. It is for these reasons that I am fully authorized by the B.P.R.D. to give Abe Sapien #6 – The Shape Of Things To Come part 1 a solid… Read Full Review
This issue is quite different to what you would expect, but that does not mean that it is disappointing at all. Although it might not be as action packed, it is filled with emotion and strong story-telling, which lets the reader know that something great is planned for this series. Something that just might break the tradition of the BPRD universe! Read Full Review

The main issue so far for me is there is just a lack of narrative tension so far, but, as you pointed out, that is sort of the intent. It's easy to recommend this series to new readers since it basically starts over with this issue and manages to recap the previous events at the same time. It's kind of difficult for me to recommend this to anyone that just finished the previous series because it's so similar. I didn't dislike this issue, but the dj vu was a bit much. I couldn't place it at first, but when I sat down to write the review it hit me that I had basically written this already which changed how I wrote about the issue. It's not bad, but it's old hat at this point. Read Full Review
In terms of story, "Abe Sapien" still feels like it's catering to the Mignola-verse completists. So long as that's enough to bring in the sales, fair enough. The big reason to read the title right now, though, is Fiumara's art, which is guaranteed to knock your socks off. If he and brother Max Fiumara keep trading story arcs as the main artist, nothing could happen for months on end and I'd stick around. If a Fiumara brother draws it, I'll read it. These two artists are just that good. Read Full Review
