David Dastmalchian's Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter may be a much more meta, much less fantastical approach to the wild horror concepts that Dark Horse has been known for over the years, but it's still a very enjoyable introduction to what could be the publisher's next great, twisted hit. Count Crowleys creative team makes the reader feel like a kid watching a bad horror theater program of the eighties with hosts such as Svengoolie or Elvira, Mistress of the Night. The host cutting in on the movie to crack bad jokes and doing little skits. The worse the movie was the more fun the show. This first book is an enjoyably chilling intro to this fun campy romp. Jerri Bartman is an alcoholic News Reporter who ends up losing her job after she get drunk before conducting an interview. Since the television station is family owned her brother decides to give her another opportunity hosting late night horror flicks. At first she refuses, but after seeing all her bills piling up she decides take the given opportunity. She gets into costume hits the bottle & then gets on TV and tells the people watching what she think of them & what she thinks of the movie they're about to watch as only she can. The comic ends with a cliffhanger that even I can't explain, but just know I'm waiting on the next issue.
