After those shorts stories from Mike Mignola and Ben Stenbeck and now this arc with Chris Roberson and Paolo and Joe Rivera, I think Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. has established itself firmly and it's definitely vying for the position of my favorite Mignola series. While Hellboy in Hell may have signalled an end to the character's story, this book is proving that there are still plenty of tales to tell within the character's lifespan and career with the BPRD. Hellboy and the BPRD continues to be a lot of fun and has me looking forward to selectively checking out a few more miniseries from this property. This issue doesn't do a lot of heavy lifting in terms of story but it delivers on the setting and characters within the period and providing for a good deal of excitement action with a mix of tension and suspense. Paola and Joe Rivera definitely capture the nature of the period and the settings well and I love the way the layouts work with camera placement and facial expressions throughout, especially for Hellboy. I could have used a little more meat to the story, but this is one where you're in for the ride as much as the story and it works well in what it wants to achieve here. Read Full Review
The artwork features the well known art style of Mignola, with an influence of the penciller Paolo Rivera. You can tell how quickly time seems to pass, as the subtle light changes between the action sequences. Even the cover has a subtle nod, to a well known children's toy the invisible dog leash. My only complaint for this book is Hellboy needs his trusty handgun. In this issue he carries a standard revolver, but I need the Samaritan to be in Hellboy's hand as he shoots his vile enemies! Other than that tiny rant I loved this issue. The art is superb and this story has a nice flow and pace. This is a book I am excited to see where Mignola is taking us and it's so refreshing to see Hellboy at the start of his career and just to see how he develops into such a badass monster killer. I am an undying fan of Mignola and over the years have read many of his series, and I have to say that all of them are satisfying in one way or another. But Hellboy was the comic that started it all, and still remains an incredible title. No one writes like Mignola, and while Beyond The Fences isn't the first of his books that I would recommend to a new reader of Hellboy, it still scratches that itch. Read Full Review

Ultimately, in case there was any doubt, Mignola and Co. have not lost it when it comes to Hellboy. Not even close. The Riveras are a smart choice for the line and inkwork, and the story here is interesting enough to keep you engaging. It lacks the epic, sweeping storytelling beats of the main, present-set series, but thats almost to be expected. Regardless, these mini-series are becoming a reliably solid read – definitely worth a look if youre already hooked. Read Full Review
Normally, I am a big fan of Mignola, the artist and/or the writer. But there has been something a little off-putting about this series. Fans will no doubt like the fact that they get to see Hellboy ata younger time in his life and the formation of the B.P.R.D. I on the other hand would rather see new stories set in the present rather than the past. Read Full Review
