In short, Beyond the Fences has been a truly great read. Not only does it work by adding to Hellboy's world and past and providing more stories to enjoy with the titular hero but it also stands as a masterclass in comic storytelling. Script and art have been perfectly judged from the very first cover and it is truly one of those books that simply remind you of everything you've ever loved about the medium in the first place. Like the story, the art is polished but violent. The monster's arrival at a child-filled school is almost iconic as it is simple. I will admit the fight between Hellboy and the strange dog thing is action filled and visually solid as they both trade blows. The vision scenes are amazing, even as they raise a whole bunch of questions, they look absolutely great. Read Full Review
This Hellboy arc is one that I started on a lark just because I was curious about its placement in the timeline and it felt like a good way to try and reconnect without having to be caught up in so much backstory. It definitely worked well for me in being accessible while still being part of a larger world and leaves me very curious to dip my toes in a bit more in the coming year to see what clicks and what doesn't for me. There's a lot to like with this property and the team involved across the board have some some fantastic work with it. I'm frustrated by the layout of the series since I'm not sure what's next, but perhaps there's some sort of checklist I'll discover that will make the hunt for more all the more exciting. Mingola loves to tie everything together, so we get some flashbacks to past Hellboy events. It's cool, though, because the web of events, characters, and places that make up the Mignola-verse are super fun to map out. It's crazy to find out that Edward Gray is somehow connected to Abe Sapien. Hellboy thrives in the tiny details, the small minutiae that make up a great fictional mythology. But it's a series that also loves the big picture, and isn't afraid to inject some action when it's needed.
