The Midnight Circus is a great addition to the Hellboy mythos.  It fills in some of the gaps to provide a little more backstory to the character and how he became the man and the hero later on in life.  It also shows how deeply that Professor Bruttenholm cares for the boy in a world where the child is treated as an outcast and a bit of a freak. This story really feels like something that was done for the fans. People wanted more stories with young Hellboy, so Mike Mignola went out and wrote an awesome one. People wanted more Duncan Fegredo on a Hellboy book, so that's exactly what we got. If you're a fan, this was for you and it was an absolute treat. Hellboy: The Midnight Circus is a thoroughly enjoyable graphic novel and a real return to form for Mignola. As anyone who follows me on Front Toward Gamer knows I've been severly critical of Mignola in a slew of previous reviews so its nice to read something of his that I could just strait up enjoy. I won't deny that the story works more for its atmosphere and style then the actual substance but sometimes that's all as story really needs to be and this is definitely one of those times. Hellboy: The Midnight Circus creates an immersive and dreamlike atmosphere that pulls you into the bizarre and unsettling world it creates for a great journey that skirts the thin line between dream and nightmare, highly recommended.
