The Shaolin Cowboy is completely off the wall. Like an unhinged stream of consciousness, but less of a stream, more of an unrelenting downpour. Like a scathing commentary on modern America and technology, but with more chi paths, talking crabs, and house pets with a cigarette problem. The book follows no traditional narrative structure. There really is not many artists like Darrow out there.Dave Stewart's brilliant coloring.The unbridled myth like story-telling.How Darrow places real world objects in this world. It's a nice touch that works as both a joke and social commentary.The effortless mix of genres that feels so natural you hardly notice. It could easily be jarring but it's not "You got a lot of Buddist hutzpah" The Trump radiation symbol on page 12. Funny and kinda frightening.Talking vultures as both a greek chorus, a source of exposition and humor.How Darrow balances pointed humor and actual pathos.The use of actual martial art techniques and philosophies.Darrow's ability to capture violence. With the artistic freedom and raw talent to create whatever the hell he feels like, Geof Darrow delivers comic booking in its purest form: an unfiltered, unrefined dose of creative id delivered straight from the artist's brain to the reader's eyeballs. Darrow’s art speaks for itself in the visually stunning return to Shaolin Cowboy. Unfortunately, the writing and over-the-top social commentary don’t keep up the pace – instead offering more than their fair share of eye-rolling and that’s a shame. Now, I'm sure for those that know the original material, this may actually make sense and be a great continuation. Anyone like me that tries to come into it now though is going to be utterly baffled at what they're reading.
