Earth has fallen. The multiple Doomsdays have defeated Supergirl, Superboy, Steel, and the Eradicator. Now it all comes down to a weakened Superman versus the monster known as Doomslayer in this, the epic finale of "Reign of the Doomsdays"!
In the grand scheme of things, Action Comics ends in a way that allows its readers to relax and know that, even though this is the final issue, the Superman story isnt really over. Ive been a reader of Superman since I was a boy. My nostalgic sensibilities wish it wasnt ending, but I certainly can rest easy with the type of ending Mr. Cornell gave us. It is clear, based on this last issue, based on this last scene, that Cornell has a great grasp on just who Superman is. But we didn't really get to see him write a Superman story. We got the end of the Luthor arc and this Doomsday arc. I want to read more Cornell on Superman. I want to read more of the Superman described in that last scene.Will the DCnU Superman have that feeling of hope, optimism, and inspiration? Will the new DCnU have a Supergirl that fights to defend her home? I can only hope so. Read Full Review
Even if the last four pages are considerably more enjoyable than the preceding sixteen, Cornell has given Action Comics historic first volume an excellent goodbye and thats really all we could have wanted. Read Full Review
I feel like there should be some sort of ceremony here, some sort of eulogy for Action Comics, but I really dont know how to do one. Its not really the end, after all, just the end of the current age. And Supermans seen ages end before, more than anybody else. Ill just cross my fingers that when we get Action Comics #1 in a couple of weeks, Grant Morrison shows us how, once again, Superman deserves to fly. Read Full Review
Eh. Once the spaceship began talking to Supes and telling him how to defeat the Doomslayer/save the world, my eyes began to roll and I stopped paying full attention to this story... It was just all too pat. Supes gets blown up or something by the Doomslayer last issue, but here we find out that he was actually pulled inside the spaceship's informational engines(which Supes helpfully tells us as soon as it happened! Does this sort of thing happen to Supes SO often that he's completely unaffected by it?), so he could learn the secret to beating the Doomslayer and sending the ship back to it's own dimension/blowing it up(I'm still kind of foggy on that...). I liked Lois's speech to Supes to end this issue(why the hell didn't she just tell him that before he went on his asinine trek across America?!), but the story just wrapped up TOO neatly for my liking. The bulk of the pages are by Gimenez and he does a serviceable job. However, there are definitely pages that look rushed and sketchy. It's not that the main story could have been saved by the artwork alone, but it certainly would have helped if there was a single artist throughout the entire storyline who was at the top of his game. Great art can help you forgive a mediocre story. Average art will never have the same effect. When it comes to ending a story, Cornell seems to have a solid grasp on what's going to satisfy an audience.
