On the subject of art Moritat again provides the same level of excellence. Things are given a more visceral tint with this issue, but Moritat follows suit with his linework, accompanied as usual by interesting panel layouts and expression. Week in and week out, I constantly recommend 'All-Star Western' to my friends who are looking for something different than the usual superhero fare. It's Western stories that are just crazy and weird enough to entertain those people who aren't usually into the genre. Add into that some background on Gotham City that ties into some current events in the Batman universe, and you've got one of the best and often overlooked titles on DC's New 52 shelf. I really enjoyed this issue; both the main story as well as the back-up that introduces Tomahawk to readers. I think both stories are well organized, the pacing is good, and are a great example of how best to create and present a group of characters who are working together to solve a crime. I think this issue is, overall, really well done. My only real complaint are the villains used in the book; they did feel a bit cliche. I understand that integrating Haly's Circus, it makes sense to have crazed, murderous clowns; but it's a concept we've seen countless times. I think it could have been a little bit more creative. If you're in the mood for action, All-Star Western #13 has you covered. The problems creep in when you start asking for a clear, fresh direction to drive the book into its next enthralling adventure. The Haly's Circus angle feels tired, and the story lacks a high degree of coherence. There's no doubt that these creators can and will turn this ship around; however, it may be better to wait for some momentum to build if you're strapped for cash. Read Full Review
