This is a solid finale to the current adventures of Khalid Nassour as Doctor Fate, but it leaves us with a lot of questions that hopefully will be answered soon elsewhere in the DC Universe. Read Full Review

What a ride! A rollercoaster that spits out rainbows kind of ride. Since starting this serious a couple issues ago i've been a fan of Dr. Fate. I really enjoy the interaction between Khalid and Nabu and the teacher, student dynamic. The conclusion of the whole dying threads of life seemed to rush. Such a big build up and just ended with a beam of light. Don't get me wrong the beam of light was cool, but i felt this conflict deserved a better ending. The mythological aspect of this comic is really what draws you in with the power of Egyptian gods and helmets with spirits in them, it's easy to capture the imagination. There is no way to explain the art without using the word psychedelic. Each page pops with color and swirls of well...more color. Don't get distracted there is definitely a story worth reading underneath. Read Full Review

Unfortunately, the art does little to help that opinion. While the backgrounds seem trippy and interesting in their own right, they also highlight the flat, uninteresting foreground details in the characters. Fate, Thoth and everything else in the frame seem like an afterthought and it makes the panels which feature action boring. The preeminent magic force in the DC universe deserves a host that takes that responsibility seriously and art that showcases the power, beauty and majesty the character demands. Read Full Review

Doctor Fate is finally over and I'm sure there's dancing in the streets over it because this series was just a mess and besides for the excellent art here, this issue is no different.  Things just happen "because" and we never really get the idea that Khalid will go on to be a great hero at the end or just revert back to his whining ways. While I'm sure we'll see Khalid brought back at some point somewhere else as DC Comics tends to find new paths for characters that get lost along the way, this is a pretty disappointing ending for this series that started off with so much promise. Paul Levitz is one of my favorite writers going back to his work in the 70's and 80's and I got into much of what he did here. But the book became increasingly unfocused and unsure of itself and what it wanted to do that it's hard to tell if it's because of the writer and poor plotting of storylines or some sort of editorial mandate that just made it impossible to really connect well with the rest of the continuity. It's a loss for readers and a loss for DC that has me hopeful that someone else will figure out how to exploit all of this in an engaging way in the future. Read Full Review
