Besides for finales to big events this might be the best Annual I've seen that furthers an ongoing story. Yeah that seems pretty specific, but I swear it's a good thing. Justin Jordan has been writing the hell out of Kyle Rayner and his supporting cast, and this Annual just blew me away. I had to go back and read it twice, and usually that's a bad thing but in this instance it was a pleasure. So much going on, and so many ideas thrown at you to sit back and contemplate, it really opens the doors for Kyle to do anything or nothing in the future. This issue is also a beautiful read because of it's artist Stephen Segovia who I hope becomes a regular on the series because it's the best the book has looked since it's first year. So if you've been a fan of New Guardians you'll definitely want to pick this issue up, at the very least it continues the story, and the next issue will pick up where this left off. So good. If you have been enjoying New Guardians, this issue will be no different. There was plot advancement both in terms on this storyline and in terms of the overall direction of the book. Despite some flaws, it was worth my time and money. Read Full Review
This was an amazing annual and while it didn't answer everything and really gave us more questions it still was a sold story from start to finish. The only complaint I have is the artist change near the end of the issue, and it's noticeable. It's not terrible art but it's different enough from Segovia's that it took me out of the story just bit during a critical moment. Other than that, another winner for the Green Lantern crew. Stephen Segovia, Edgar Salazar, and Jed Dougherty handle the art here, and as a whole, the artwork is easy to follow. In general though, there is a common problem where the close-ups tend to be full of detail and life. Unfortunately, this tends to become less of the case the further out the shots become. It's an unfortunate distraction, as one panel is wonderfully illustrated, while the very next one loses all polish. Read Full Review
This is a decent annual for New Guardians. Sure, the ending is somewhat confused, and Oblivion lacks the focus which his previous incarnation possessed, but there's a lot to enjoy here. Justin Jordan gives readers a glimpse of what Kyle Rayner experienced beyond the Source Wall " and does more than enough to intrigue you with it. I certainly want to know what has been broken, anyway. Read Full Review
Green Lantern: New Guardians Annual #2 has some definite issues, but the story itself is engaging, the characters lively, and the tone strong. Though it lacks the finesse of Jordan's finest work, it's an enjoyable addition to Kyle Rayner's story and one that won't fail to excite fans of the series. Read Full Review
Despite the hiccups in this book, there is some excellent characterization. The interactions between the Guardians and Kyle are funny. Kyle must also look deep within himself throughout this issue. Furthermore, Carol Ferris is prominently featured, and in her scenes we get a good glimpse inside of what drives her. Also revealed is just exactly what Kyle Rayner witnessed beyond the Source Wall. The answer may be a bit of a let down to some, but how it has changed Kyle sets up limitless options (and immense powers) down the road. This gives Jordan many roads he can take in the future of this series while he further examines the power and importance of the White Lantern. Weve only seen the tip of the iceberg in regards to this power. Read Full Review
Still, the overall pacing of this book allows Justin Jordan and company the room to produce what is, essentially, a done-in-one comic that still has major repercussions to Kyle Rayner and the various Lantern Corps as a whole. The great thing about this book, and in particular, this villain, is it provides readers with the essential characteristics of Kyle Rayner, a character who has become more and more difficult to pin down as his power set has grown. There's definitely still room to improve, but Green Lantern: New Guardians Annual #2 is, at its heart, the story of a powerful man overcoming - and even accepting - his own flaws. It's the sort of human message more DC books could use these days. Read Full Review
Overall this annual succeeded in its main objective of bringing the mystery of Kyle's time on the other side of the Source Wall to the forefront. There are a couple of what I'd consider major narrative issues in terms of the Guardians' actions and Kyle's out of the blue understanding of what's going on that brings it down a peg for me. I would give this book three out of five lanterns for someone who is okay with the Carol/Kyle thing. But for me personally I find it such a stretch and I cannot get behind it, so I'm dropping it down to two out of five lanterns for readers like me who don't buy into it. Read Full Review
