TMNT Universe #9 is a good entry into the IDW TMNT world. Campbell and Curnow introduce a new Pantheon god in the Toad Baron and also delve into Angel and Alopex's characters. Revel finishes off his four-part backup story in this issue and brings to light some great information and backstory to a character that has yet to have the spotlight shown onto her until now. To be honest, this type of story isn't really my thing. That being said, writers Sophie Campbell and Bobby Curnow do a great job establishing just how bizarre and twisted the Toad Baron's realm is without resorting to David Lynch-esque randomness. TMNT Universe #9 is a promising start to a new arc. Despite my initial lack of interest in another Pantheon based story, Universe #9 has turned things around and left me interested to see where this is going. Angel and Alopex deserve more time in the spotlight and this is a great way to show them off. The artwork is great and Campbell's dialogue that sounds natural. The artwork is gnarly at times, but works well in this fantasy environment. I've got a bit of a pet peeve when characters help themselves to someone else's canoe and let themselves into rooms uninvited, but it's not really a big deal. The backup story has a gratifying conclusion, I enjoyed the opportunity to explain ninja history while simultaneously exploring Jennika's character. She may be do for her own one-shot soon.
nice fantasy elements, with really beautiful art (aside from a few wonky looking faces)
this story felt like something out of Jim Henson's Dark Crystal or Labyrinth.
i'm not overly sold on the Pantheon. this issue didn't really do much to convince me.
i actually enjoyed the multi-part back up story better than the main story.
at least the back-up actually had some Ninja Turtles in it.
