On Comics Ground - Aaron Jones Jul 23, 2019

The Red Summer Special is an appetizer holding you over until the real meal arrives. Six short stories surrounding your favorite characters in the Bitter Root universe reveal some critical moments in their background. Some important questions are answered while more questions develop. It's raw, it's gritty, it's beautiful and horrifying all at once. As a history-buff and an amateur genealogist, the stories connect seamlessly with my own family history during the bitter 1920's in the United States. If you have been reading Bitter Root and want to know more about the backstories of Berg, Blink, Ma Etta, Ford, and Cullen, pick up your copy of the Red Summer Special today! Read Full Review

Black Nerd Problems - Morgan Hampton Jul 10, 2019

The Bitter Root Summer Special keeps us satisfied by giving us a collection of short stories that fill in our gaps of information regarding characters and events from the past. It's the perfect bridge between two arcs and it does a lot of work to flesh out some of the questions that we had after the cliffhanger at the end of the last arc. Read Full Review

Horror DNA - James Ferguson Jul 25, 2019

While I love this collection, I would have been equally satisfied if each of these stories appeared as backups in the main series. The anthology serves to further establish the vast mythos at work, however it's not very accessible to new readers. That being said, if you're even casually interested in this series this offers a good primer as to what to expect, along with a nice variety of impressive artwork. It's like a sampler for you to get psyched for what I hope is a second volume coming soon. Read Full Review
