To put it bluntly, there is nothing too terribly new about "Guarding the Globe." That said, it is only because this book has adopted the tried and true approaches to the team book, and is on the fast track to perfecting the formula. If "Invincible" is the best superhero comic in the universe, then "Guarding the Globe" will soon be in the running for "best team" book. Guarding the Globe is spinning off the best super hero comic out there. Its got a lot to live up to. Hester has taken the reigns of these characters and is making this title his own while keeping what's great about them. He's going to be taking them places they can go now with their own series. Todd Nauck has been a comic staple for years. His artwork is consistently great and he never falls behind when it comes to deadlines. That great reputation continues with Guarding. Facial expressions could use some help, as different people have the same expression when talking in different tones. The same could be said with the look of some characters as well. Characters like Britt stand out, but the woman don't fare as well. It doesn't distract from an otherwise great issue, but something worth noting. Nauck switches between big action and quiet moments without missing a beat. With the Invincible universe being back to basics, Nauck's artwork fits this mission statement better than most artists. The pencils have a classic look to them that is always appealing to a reader. Read Full Review

Because we can't get enough of the characters from INVINCIBLE, we now have the return of the Guardians of the Globe. Phil Hester and Todd Nauck take over the reigns and we're treated to a great mix of action and character development. You don't have to be fully versed in the backstories of all the characters but there is a benefit in knowing who they are (you can always check out the team page here on Comic Vine). Even if you're not completely caught up on INVINCIBLE (like me), you can jump right in and catch up or get to know the characters. There's a lot of action and plenty more coming. A strange mixture of characters make up The Guardians, from the cool guys to the ordinary guys to the quite bizarre, but they all bring something to the table. Really nice artwork by Todd Nauck goes well with Phil Hester's story, going from the sublime to the ridiculous, but in a very good way. A good first issue gets an 8/10 for an interesting read. I don't think I'd pick this up if I wasn't already a fan of Invincible, but if you are a fan of the adventures of Mark Grayson I recommend this. If you tend to be a trade-waiter for Invincible, there really isn't anything in this series (so far) that would spoil anything that hasn't already been on a cover of Invincible, so you could pick this up as a monthly and get your Invinci-verse fix! Hester's writing is off to a good start, and hopefully he'll be able to avoid the potholes inherent to a large team title. Nauck's pencils and inks have developed, and I look forward to seeing how he continues to improve as an artist. Overall this title gets 3.5/5 stars from me, and it absolutely has a place on my pull list! Read Full Review

When this book is good it’s great, but when it’s bad it’s very bad. If you enjoyed the first series then you’ll probably really like this issue, but if you were like me and disliked the first series you may not want to pass on this series as it’s a big improvement on the franchise. The fact that this is an improvement compared to volume one and I still don’t know if I like it or not should tell you just how bad the first series was though. Read Full Review

There's great potential in this series. In the text page at the end of the book, Robert Kirkman discusses how each issue will shine the spotlight on a different character. That's a great idea, but I hope the focus is even tighter than in this first issue. It might create some potential new fan favorites while expanding the scope of the "Invincible" universe. As the creative team finds its rhythm and masters its techniques, the qualms expressed in this review should be easy to overcome. Read Full Review
