WHAT IF...CARTER BURKE HAD LIVED? For years, fans of James Cameron's legendary Aliens questioned whether Carter Burke, a company man more hateable than the Xenos themselves, had actually survived the traumatic events on the terraforming colony Hadley's Hope. Now the actor behind the beloved villain, Paul Reiser, joins his son Leon and the star-studded team of writers and producers Adam F. Goldberg, Brian Volk-Weiss and Hans Rodionoff for a journey back to Hadley's Hope and the twisted escape of a man who should have died.

Comic Watch - Theron Couch Mar 6, 2024

This comic defies expectations. Though the idea of Burke surviving was already an intriguing one, grounding it in events that did happen in the movie rather than changing them significantly made it more compelling from the jump. It reads less like a What If? and more like a spin-off which is to its credit. In the pantheon of Marvels Alien titles, What It? Aliens #1 might be the most promising first issue theyve released yet. Vilanova delivers fantastic action throughout the issue. I love the visual style of this issue and how it transitions from the huge action of Burkes escape to the dark reality of this life. Read Full Review

Overall, I liked Aliens: What If? #1, as it shows the potential to tell more stories with side characters you'd never conceive of getting the focus. This issue also establishes some interesting avenues for the story, which could easily fill out its five-issue run. With Paul Reiser at the helm, Aliens: What If...? will please fans of the franchise and sci-fi fanatics alike. Read Full Review

What the future holds for the character is yet to be seen, but we're thrilled to see him back for this adventure not only for a narrative that is tonally reminiscent of the movie, but also offers up a compelling aesthetic that feels both fresh and familiar. Read Full Review

    Plot
This comic tells how Carter Burke managed to escape the massacre on LV-426 and board the ship where Ripley and the girl were in a cryogenic state. In this escape ship, Bukre talks to Mr. Yutani, who orders him to eliminate Ripley. so that there are no witnesses to the 158 deaths at the Hadley's Hope plant, since as Burke failed to obtain a Xenomorph egg, his mission failed.

Burke throws Ripley into the Fiorina Fury 161 pose and thus earns a life contract with Weyland-Yutani, but after 35 years they used him as a scapegoat for everything that happened and his reputation is in tatters, his daughter does not. He wants to see and lives in an asteroid, but everything is about to change when he gets a Xenomorph egg.

I hope that this is the first of many What Ifs using Alien/Predator. If this is what it takes to do something interesting with this IP, so be it. The ongoing series has been a frustratingly mixed bag, and there's only so much the current anthology mini can do. This is the first time since Marvel got the license that they've done something sort of creative with it.

Perfectly cromulant, but What If stories work better as single stories instead of being spread out over multiple issues.

Honestly, this reads like Forrest Gump in Aliens. It's not intentional, I think, but it sure is a bit baffling. Burke seems too goofy for my tastes. I don't know why I should care about this story yet.
