Anyone who steps up to write the team is going to have to work overtime to make it all work, and luckily, writer Josh Trujillo is up to the challenge. He's written the team several times in the past, and he gets the characters, which is very important. The Fantastic Four is a family, and Trujillo knows how to put each of them in their place. The issue starts in media res and then fills us in on why the group is on trial with the apes when we open up the book. Plot Red Ghost attacks the Baxter Building with his army of super-powered apes and infiltrates Reed's lab. It's interesting that Marvel chose to cross over the FF with the old Planet of the Apes movies, not the new ones, and it's definitely the better choice! I'm a huge fan of the movies and Josh Trujillo just nails the different personalities of the ape characters. Andrea Di Vito provides solid art, although I think the book would have been so much better with a more traditional or even retro 60s art style. The modern, digital style doesn't quite fit the nostalgic character of the book and makes it look forgettable. All in all, POTA VS. FF #1 is a fun book though.

I would have loved to give this an 8 rating. It started out so great. The dialogue is good, it's obvious that Josh gets the characters. The artist achieved all of the likenesses of the apes. All good stuff. We get Red Ghost in here, which is genius. I don't think the last flashback was necessery, but whatever. The trial was smartly written with Johnny jumping in when he wasn't wanted and they have no powers to help them. All good stuff. Then Josh goes and does something to ruin the whole setup. He randomly gives the FF powers to the four main ape characters. Why? I don't know. No set, no nothing. It was completely silly and out of the blue. I would have preferred no one get the powers and the FF try to figure out how to escape without their more

A fun and entertaining introduction to this new crossover. The crossover between the fantastic four and the planet of apes feels very natural, as both franchises are pillars of modern sciencie fiction. The art is good and the fantastic apes have potential. My only problem is that this miniseries is 4 issues long and and there are only three issues left. The next issue needs to move the story forward if they want to tell a good story. Doom is always appreciated.
