I'll say what I said at the beginning of this series. Rise of the Black Panther is the perfect origin for newcomers and a great start to retelling the legacy of Wakanda. It's definitely a must-read for anyone looking to jump into the world of Black Panther. Every hero should have a book like this that so gracefully retells their origins and greatest adventures. Respect to Narcisse, Coates, Renaud, and Pina for treating Black Panther with such care. Read Full Review
Evan Narcisse ensures that Rise of the Black Panther feels like a true series rather than a series of vignettes by tying together various threads from previous issues. The fight between Black Panther and Killmonger is a unique encounter, showcasing the brains and brawn of both combatants. Read Full Review
Beyond a few well-crafted sequences of action, there's little of value here that couldn't be found on a Wikipedia entry for free. Read Full Review
T'Challa wraps up his business by bringing down Killmonger in an action-heavy finale. Action-heavy is fine, but unfortunately, it doesn't counterbalance a sudden shortage of the thoughtful ideas that made this title great. Instead, it tries to make do with a slab of "preemptive war" thinking cribbed from the MCU Black Panther. The result is an ending that definitely feels like a bit of a low note.
Killmonger isn't as complex or well motivated as he is in the film, but maybe he'l finally humble these smug Wakandan elites.
