Doctor Aphra Chaos Agent #1 does a great job of introducing Aphra to new readers without diminishing her established history. It effectively showcases her signature resourcefulness and wit against the backdrop of a shifting political landscape full of challenges and intrigue. Aphra becomes a reluctant agent of the New Republic's Daggersan agency tasked with recovering lost and forgotten archaeological artifacts across the galaxy. To keep her from going rogue, the director disables Aphra's tattoos, adding an extra layer of control. I'm excited to see how this new relationship with the New Republic develops and how Aphra's complex character evolves in future issues. Read Full Review
This issue is a great start to the new series, highlighting everything that makes Doctor Aphra one of the best characters in the Star Wars Universe while taking her in a bold new direction. Read Full Review
Chen may be the first writer on Aphra to really get the character since Gillen first introduced here. This opening issue has plenty of familiar Star Wars “things” to it, but it also feels like it gets Aphra better and is trying to step things up just a bit more so that it's not as cartoony as things had become in the past couple of runs. It helps that Guzman's artwork is fantastic, as they really capture some of the cityscape elements at night well, or just various parts of the aesthetic, so I'm surprisingly optimistic that there's potential here. Everything about where they're trying to slot in Aphra to work is something that I hope sticks for a while because it's ideal for being able to keep Aphra focused but still able to go off-script and be who she is. Hopefully, with fewer guest appearances going forward so we can establish a good cast for the property itself. Read Full Review

After Alyssa Wong's descent into self-destruction as a writer and ultimately leading to the cancelation of the title, I did not have high hopes for this reboot. Especially when Marvel is casting their writers. Apparently only Asian females can write Doctor Aphra. With all of that being said, Cherish Chen did a great job with this issue. She went back to basics. When they revealed that the parole officer was her accomplice, I let out an audible chuckle. Good job on that one. The gauntlet was not a great plot device and the cliffhanger was subpar, but overall I really enjoyed the tone of this issue and I'm looking forward to the next one.
