The flaws in his issue stem more from Whilce Portacio's art. Once again, there are some flashes of greatness here, but his work is far too inconsistent for its own good. The random occurrences of negative space on the page would be intriguing if they were put to better use. Portacio's figures are woefully unattractive at times, with jawbones that could slice diamonds and facial expressions that often run counter to the emotions expressed in the script. Artwork aside, "Uncanny X-Men" does, at least, feel like a progressive book again, and it's hard not to be excited about the direction it's moving in. With the effects of M-Day finally reversed and Kieron Gillen announced as the incoming co-writer, the future of the X-Men feels brighter than in a long time. Read Full Review
Whilce Portacio is back drawing an X-Men book after having propelled X-Factor and then, Uncanny X-Men to high sales in the 1990s. Whoever thought he could rekindle the magic here was wrong and I wish he gets off the book soon. At this point, having bad stories by Fraction and now bad art by Portacio makes this book one of the last one I want to read when I get my piles. Portacio attempts the realistic and smooth look that graced the series prior his arrival and fails utterly. His style just doesnt work. He lacks the perfect anatomy to pull it off and his characters faces look too rough to display any emotion or facial expression. Then the inking by Tadeo only exposes Portacios weaknesses further instead of highlighting his strengths. Read Full Review
And then there's Whilce Portacio. Sigh. A pretty ordinary and somewhat unexciting issue of Uncanny X-Men, all told. If this story-arc is supposed to be getting me worked about the December-launching Generation Hope, then it's failing. Badly. Let's hope for better luck next month… Read Full Review
