Come for the cover and stay for the history making. EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS is not the perfect comic, but it is a perfect re-brand for one of the most infamous comic lines in western comics. This new venture by EC and Oni Press is a must read even if horror isn't your thing. In twenty or thirty years time, people will ask if you remember the re-launch of EC comics and you want to be able to say yes! Read Full Review
Epitaphs From the Abyss #1 might feel tame compared to today's horror, it's much more comedic and less about scares, but it mines the classic concept of EC Comics perfectly delivering four tales that'll entertain and get you to think. Each is varied in story, art, and tone, and each delivers unexpected moments that'll keep readers guessing. It's rare when there's no weak stories in an anthology, and Epitaphs From the Abyss #1 has none. It's a fantastic start to the classic brand that'll hopefully breathe new life into this type of horror. Read Full Review
Blood, gore, and the unease rising in your belly are all in Epitaphs from the Abyss. Like any anthology, some stories hit better than others, with one out of the four ending up being a must-read and the other three coming in close second as entertaining in their own right. Read Full Review
This issue hit the marks for me from cover to cover. Horror and suspense is hard to do in comics, but I think each of these creative teams did a great job and I cannot wait for the next issue. Read Full Review
Epitaphs From the Abyss is supposed to be horror satire examining various aspects of modern societyeverything from politics to the internet to even vaccinesand while the four stories in the issue are all interesting in that old school Tales From the Crypt vein of things, most of them feel a little too gimmicky or superficial to really be shocking or thought provoking Read Full Review
Great! I was worried due to the low user ratings until I read the issue. These stories are satirical and horrific. Some people might be offended. Not me! Conservative politics are incredibly horrific these days. Look beyond your world and empathize. Then maybe you’ll see the horror too. Can’t wait for the next issue!
Hard to review a book that lacks the basic components of stories. There just isn't enough in any of these stories to review. There is no structure to any of these stories much less a point. They superficially introduce characters, something happens with no real explination or reason as to why it happened, then they end it. I guess this is their "horror". There is no flow or arc. The endings that are intended to shock just don't hit or stick with the reader. What should have been fun, just isn't. How hard is it to write a werewolf, vampire, or zombie story? It should be paint by numbers but they manage to mess it up. This lacks the intelligence, charm, and self awareness of how to make a point without beating your audience over the more
There was a lot of hype around the EC relaunch and I was genuinely excited for this. I couldn’t even guess it could be this bad.
Trite, predictable and preachy (dull surprise). Complete joke to put in the back that this is a tribute to Bill Gaines. EC were the bad boys of comics in their day. There is nothing bold or rebellious here, it is the same echo-chamber bullshit that pervades most modern comics.
I am not giving this a 1 out of spite, it’s really that bad.
Could not even finish this trash. The first story was boring and predictable. Second story is the worst thing I’ve read in years. I threw out the comic.
